Help me find a CCG/strategy game

I've played a number of CCGs and strategy/tabletop games in the past and don't exactly have the inclination to start something up again that will cost me a lot of time or money to play right now, because I lack both. Thus I figure somewhere out there is an online game that captures the strategy and fun without the need to buy a thousand cards/minis. Really I'm looking for something where the games are pretty short, but have some strategy and customization to them, and can save your progress over time so I can hop in and out whenever I have 10 minutes or whatnot to play. Ai opponents are ok, but I bet playing other people would me more fun if such a game exists and has a community around it (thus I figure its probably going to be some sort of java game). I preferably wouldn't like to pay much for the game--optimally nothing at all--and really don't want something where all the best players are the ones who have paid for their supremacy. I've googled a bit, and naturally there are metric tons of crappy java games out there and I'm not really wanting to jump into something for a few hours only to find its broken, imbalanced, or crap and am then just jumping from bad game to bad game due to my ignorance. I know someone out here is playing this perfect game right now, so let me in on it, eh?

Dominion seems like it'd be what you want, but I don't know if you can really play it online. I found one german site using google, but I haven't tried it out yet.

You could check out this http://www.estiah.com/

A few PA people used to play, its a sort of lunchtime mmo/ ccg strat game. You can play some PvP sort of, it plays your deck for you when people challenge you.

Online CCG based (loosely) on MtG. It's fairly entertaining, and (best of all) free.

Astral Masters fits the bill. The game will cost you a few bucks, but you don't have to buy any cards or anything once you have it. Nearly endless play with other people or against the AI (which can be challenging).

Also, if you like Dominion (like another poster mentioned) you CAN play it online at a site called brettspielwelt. Download their little client program (set it to english in the options) and you'll be able to play a bunch of cool (board/card) games with people.

I'd suggest fumbbl. It's basically Java Blood Bowl, lots of strategic depth, the team building aspect of it and a large active community.

Wow, all of the games yall listed look like some quality titles--I played Estiah a while back (go Free Waffles) but don't know if I can commit the day-to-day dungeon running demands I placed on myself back when I played anymore. I think I might just go out and buy Dominion as a board game if I could convince friends of mine to play, or in the alternative try online.

Elements unexpectedly sucked out a few hours of my day yesterday--apparently I was hankering for an MtG-like fix and I didn't know it. What is the endgame like? Are the 80 or so cards I'm seeing now all that there is to the set? Is this "rainbow deck" the only viable tier-1 setup? For some reason I've bit hard on this game, but don't want to grind up my deck (and Elements is a little grindy, IMO, but quite fun) just to build the same rainbow netdeck everyone else seems to be playing.

The rainbow deck listed in the forums (both in un-upgraded newbie form and eventually the 'ultimate false god' killing deck) is currently the fastest, most reliable way to make money for new and old players alike.
However, once you've ground some cash and have 30-40k to play with, then you can basically make any deck you want.
Right now, i'm running the top-50 decks to get myself 6 copies of all the rare cards, like shards, weapons, miracles, etc. I have fun with speed poison decks, mono-fire (burn) decks, life/death vampire decks, etc.
The game has really picked up as of late, with several hard-core players joining the developer/creator and forming an actual development 'team'. New cards abound, and more are en route - along with new opponents. This will change-up the rainbow staple soon enough i'm sure.
Don't get me wrong, there is grinding for sure to make your first wad of cash, but once that's behind you, there's a lot of fun strategy/variation for you to engage in.

EDIT: What's the overall verdict on Estiah?
I wasn't very fair to it when I first tried it - the depth seemed nice and the interface was beautiful, and then I learned it was all text-based. I kinda said "ugh, text-based grindfest" and dropped it.

I really liked Estiah, my roommate and I were the top PvPers for a little while when the system first came out--in part because we weren't at max level and could clean up in every event against any other player in our level range as we slowly leveled up. I didn't mind it being text-based, and wasn't too miffed at the ongoing balancing the game needed when it was starting out. I just fell off playing because I didn't have the time to play every day and to stay on top I probably had to. Back when I played the PA community rocked.

Dominion is an excellent card game, and you can play it online for free with the german site Brettspielwelt:

    http://www.brettspielwelt.de/?nation=en

The interface is in German, but the game itself is in English. It's really easy to register and play, especially if you're just looking for random games.

For the last month I've been having alot of fun with www.battleforge.com

You can start an account for free but you will eventually want to purchase some cards. Currently, the best way to do that (in the US) is to go to Best Buy and drop $11.99 on the retail box.

This game is a fun combo of Warcraft and M:tG. Outside of the few dollars you'd need to spend on it, I think this might be exactly what you are looking for. If you do decide to check it out, feel free to mention "Shotlicker" as the screen name that refered you. Once you get settled in we can get together and crush some 2 and 4 player maps.

Atomic Brawl is what you want to play. It combines tabletop strategy with CCG for a unique and infinitely playable experience. Plus, you can play it online for free. Seriously, more people need to start playing this game, its really great.
