I had a PSP several years ago, but the only games I ever got for it were the two Mega Man titles. It crapped out after about a year (although it waited until after the warranty had expired), and even before then a number of pixels had died and made annoying spots all over the screen.
I really just want to play Mega Man: Powered Up again for the awesome level editor, but I can't justify dropping $150 just so I can play one game. What other games for the system are worth getting?
To be completely honest I don't think any decent games have come out on the PSP in the past year or so. LBP is the only one worth mentioning and if you didn't like it on the PS3 you won't like it on the PSP.
there is a psp version and if you're interested in level creation it's pretty much the ultimate. you can spend so much time just tinkering around and playing in its sandbox, or create an epic, unique, professional masterpeice
that said megaman-type gamers are usually the ones to worry about the controls being floaty and imprecise so if you know it's not for you then it's not for you
Not until they fix some bugs that make the editor crash all the time and corrupt user-created levels. I wouldn't hold on to that, the game sold abysmal.
If you like MGS then you have Portable Ops to play and Peace Walker to look forward to. MH Unite is also very good. I really liked Castlevania Dracula X, Hot Shots Golf 2, Prinny, Chains of Olympus, Reistance Retribution and Jeanne D'arc as well.
Oh yeah I forgot one big one. Valkyria Chronicles 2 is comping out on psp sometime next year.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
The Disgaea games on the PSP are great. I mean, if you're already played them then that's cool, but having them portable is just great for time wasting on the go.
To be completely honest I don't think any decent games have come out on the PSP in the past year or so.
Half-Minute Hero, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, Resistance: Retribution, Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Motorstorm: Arctic Edge, Gran Turismo, PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, Rock Band Unplugged, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny all say hi, not to mention a few of the other games mentioned and other games I just can't be assed to look up.
Add to that, my personal favorites on the thing so far have been the Metal Gear Ac!d series (Well, mostly Ac!d²), Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (never did find Powered Up), and the Power Stone Collection, off the top of my head.
And a few games people have liked, but I'm not a fan of or haven't played that aren't in the above lists: Final Fantasy: Crisis Core, Jeanne D'arc, Killzone: Liberation (Own it, haven't played it yet, though), Star Ocean: First Departure (Want it, haven't played it.), Star Ocean: Second Evolution (Want it, played Star Ocean 2 a ton back in the day), Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Grand Thef Auto Libery City Stories (Been a long time since I've played it, so I don't remember), Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories (My copy was bugged to hell, but it's fun when it's not broken), and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles.
Not to mention plenty of PSOne classics, PSN Exclusives and Minis on the Store.
Portable Ops is a terrible trap. It's got a cool story and the actual game play isn't so bad once you get into it but man, the controls suck all the fun out of it.
Rock Band Unplugged - Surprisingly, I find this game to be more fun than the home console versions. Much more involving since you're controlling all 4 parts by yourself.
LocoRoco: Midnight Carnival - A cutesy platformer from the very depths of hell. This is the Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden of platformers. If you like challenge, this is the game for you. Lots of fun if you can handle it.
Gradius Collection - Gradius I-4 & Gradius Gaiden all in one nifty package. A must for shmup fans.
SMT: Persona - Great remake of an old school SMT RPG.
Wild Arms XF - Excellent Strategy/RPG in the style of FFT but with a greater reliance on class changing.
Jeanne D'Arc - Haven't gotten around to this one yet, but I hear it's another excellent Strategy/RPG.
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? - Really tough, high quality Action/Platformer.
Also worth noting is that several popular PS1 games have come out on the PSN this year so if you've wanted to play portable versions of FF7, FF8, RE1-3, Silent Hill, Um Jammer Lammy, etc., now's the time.
Portable Ops is great. The controls are good. No complaining for pitiful reasons! If you can master the crab claw in Monster Hunter you can do the same for MGS.
Oh yeah, how could I forget about Half Minute Hero, RB Unplugged and LocoRoco. Honestly the psp might not have any killer apps, but it does have plenty of good games.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
In my mind Monster Hunter and Portable Ops are "killer apps" as I'd kill to have them on my big screen.
It's just that nothing on the system has been able to get any attention.
Capcom never pushes MH outside of Japan anyway. I think they think it's funny.
Resistance retribution is an exceptional shooter, and didnt get the attention it deserved, I feel. It even comes close to matching the look of the ps3 games at certain points.
My problem with portable ops isnt the controls (although the phenomenal peace walker demo shows they could have been better) but the generally lackluster level design. You can see why they thought smaller, bite-sized levels would work better in a handheld game, but in reality the levels feel boxy and restrictive.
Plus the fiddly and repetitive soldier-recruiting mechanic slows the pace of the whole game down. And 'managing' your troops outside of the main missions is a colossally painful mess of confusing stats and clunky menus. It's unquestionably the weakest of the 'canon' mgs games but still worth a look if you consider yourself at all invested in the series.
speaking of monster hunter. is the new one any better than the previous ones on PSP? they're amazing games, but with some seriously horrendous camera controls and it's sheer dependancy on being pin point accurate with every attack you ever do, is pretty off putting.
I really do love the games and I wanna get the new one for PSP but what's holding me off is; is there anything really new in terms of content from the past one? or is it like, online now or something? I forget, I know with MHF2 you could play online but it was through some trickery as the game wasn't designed for true online play (I think, right?).
The only thing I can add is that, if you like card games, tactics games, rpgs, metal gear solid, or any combination of the above, then look for Metal Gear Acid 2. MGA1 is okay, but 2 eclipses it in every way.
Crisis core is pretty good. Also Disgaea: afternoon of darkness.
I havent played dissidia yet but i've heard good things and its on my list.
Yes! Get Dissidia. It is easily my favorite game on the system right now.
Edit: Also, is Half-Minute Hero really worth the asking price? I played the demo of Hero 30 and loved it, but I wasn't too keen on Evil Lord 30. And from what I've heard, Princess and Knight aren't that much better. Knowing this, should I still buy it?

Hero 30 is the bulk of the game. Not only are there more Hero 30 levels than any other mode (50 compared to 30), but the levels tend to be longer and have a lot more replayability (tons of secrets) than the other modes. As far as time to complete goes, I'd say that Hero 30 accounts for about 65% of the game, Evil Lord, Princess, and Knight each account for 10%, and the last 2 modes account for 5% combined.
Your mileage may vary, but personally, I hated the Evil Lord demo, but ended up liking that mode in the actual game. Not as much as Hero 30, but it wasn't a bad way to spend an hour.
There's tons of games worth getting a PSP for. I have over 25 games for mine. :P
If I had to narrow it down to my favorites (cutting out ports that aren't super-enhanced)?
Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days
Dissidia: Final Fantasy
DJ Max Portable
Half-Minute Hero
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Patapon 1 & 2
Persona
Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?
Wild Arms XF
Wild Arsm XF is especially good if you have an FFT itch but want to play something new. It's also one of the only SRPGs I've played out there that actually requires tactics and strategy instead of over leveling everything. And its class system is built around creating hybrids over any true singular awesome classes.
And not a single mention of GripShift. I sunk so many hours into that game. Masterful arcade stunt driving with imaginative and varied levels that will have you I actually have to interrupt this post because I'm going to go play it right now.
I've got some questions about some of the games mentioned:
Monster Hunter - I've heard that this series relies heavily on multiplayer. Is that true?
Half-Minute Hero - So is this basically Wario Ware with an RPG-like story?
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? - I like side-scrolling platformers, but I heard this one was ill-received. Why was that?

Prinny was probably ill-received for the same reason Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) was. Because it's tough as nails.
I've got some questions about some of the games mentioned:
Monster Hunter - I've heard that this series relies heavily on multiplayer. Is that true?
Everything I've heard say that it's better in multiplayer but still very good in singleplayer if you're patient and up to the challenge.
Half-Minute Hero - So is this basically Wario Ware with an RPG-like story?
No. It has 4 main modes.
Hero 30 - RPG. This is the main mode and accounts for the majority of the game.
Evil Lord 30 - RTS
Princess 30 - Shmup
Knight 30 - Action/RPG/Puzzle.
Everything's sped up so like in Hero 30, a random encounter might be over in 1 second and a boss might take 5-6 sec. It's almost like a puzzle game where you have to figure out the best steps to finish a level.
Oh and despite the title, you can (and often need to) take longer than 30 seconds to beat a level. Time stops when you're in towns and you can pay money at goddess statues to reset time.
At the end of each level, you get a grade based on your speed & things like your experience LV. Also, in Hero 30, each level has 2 achievements that can be gained by meeting certain conditions. Lots of secrets in here like alternate story paths (within levels), hidden levels, and hidden equipment.
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? - I like side-scrolling platformers, but I heard this one was ill-received. Why was that?
The main reason why people complained was because jumps are like the old Castlevania games (once you jump, you're jumping arc is set) instead of Mario (you can adjust your jumps while in mid-air), thus making people feel like the difficulty is cheap. This always has struck me as a bit ridiculous - between your ability to double-jump, use your mid-air range attack to hover, and butt stomp at any time, it always felt to me like I had more control over my mid-air position than in most games.
EDIT: Prinny is hard, but I still say that the hardest new PSP game this year is LocoRoco: Midnight Carnival. Getting all of the gold medals is a challenge that would make even veterans of Demon's Souls weap.

Controls are relatively unchanged. If that's a deal breaker right there, then you've got your answer. If you're willing to give it another shot though, it's really not as bad as it starts out to be. The pin point accuracy is actually sort of a draw to me, rather than a negative. The idea being that you are wanting to land your hits to specific parts of your target, like a leg or head.
In terms of new content with Unite, there's a higher tier of difficulty, new monsters and variants, more gear, etc. Alot of the item handling has been streamlined when you're in town and receiving quest rewards, which is a blessed godsend as it makes it that much easier to deal with inventory.
Online can be done with Xlink Kai, or if you have a PS3 via Ad Hoc Party. It's still ad hoc only and not true infrastructure, but usually the above listed options work out pretty well if you can swing it.

Monster Hunter United is hundreds of hours long. You won't need another game for your PSP.

Well, no single game at least.
You could probably compile a list that might make one worth owning.
Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception
God of War: Chains of Olympus
Lumines and Lumines II
Puzzle Quest
I'm sure there are others... these are the ones off the top of my head. They're all worth owning the PSP for.

* Lego Batman (hehe)
I'm looking forward to start playing FF Tactics, it looks amazing. Also, on the PSN Store, you can purchase FF VII & FVIII.
