Looking for some advice on the pain on the outside of my right foot.
It's sharp, but not too bad. I went on a three-mile, run at an easy pace yesterday and did not feel a thing. I walked a whole lot last night and also did not feel anything.
This afternoon I started jogging and started to feel this pain. I immediately stopped running and probably won't continue until I see a doctor.
A few fun facts:
1. I recently replaced my shoes
2. I hadn't run in a few days, but had been regularly running about 8-15 miles a week. For months with a few weeks off in between
3. I take calcium and vitamin D supplements. I also eat well and stretch my legs a few times a day and before and after runs
4. I don't have health insurance
5. The pain started and intensified while I jogged. I still feel it a little, but only when I put weight on my foot
1. Should I see a regular ol' doctor or a podiatrist? I hear they're not real doctors.
2. A friend who works at a local university can probably get me a free MRI of my foot. I read somewhere that stress fractures don't come up on x-rays sometimes. Worth it?
3. Is it normal for the pain to just appear all of the sudden?
Anyone who has been through this have any advice?
Thanks
EDIT: I forgot to add that there is no tenderness or swelling. Just pain when I put weight on it.

Of course, I am not a doctor. Only your own judgment can help you, really.
I'm pretty sure stress fractures do show up on x rays. they're just kinda hard to see.
No swelling or tenderness
Incidentally, the wrong shoes could actually cause a stress fracture, so it's not an either/or situation.
I concur with Iceman. Give it a week or two of rest and see how you feel. That will be the most telling thing. I developed some serious pain almost crippling pain in my heel once that wasn't accompanied by swelling. The doctor took a quick look and said I was likely developing a heel spur, and all I really needed was to get heel cups for my shoes since the shoes weren't offering enough cushioning. I got those and I've had no pain since.
Keep in mind, though, I'm not a doctor. This is my unprofessional take on the situation.
This makes sense. I was fitted for the shoe a couple of days ago.
It's the same style of shoe -- stability -- but a full size larger. The dude at the shop measured my foot and said I was wearing shoes that were too small. I never had a problem with my last shoes, but I figured I'd try them and come back if they didn't work out.
I'd still like to know if it's a stress fracture for sure though. I'll probably see a doctor anyway.
