Looking to buy an ipod touch.

I'm in the market for a new mp3 player, and I'm always in the market for a new game system, which makes me interested in the ipod touch. At first I thought it was going to have the same little crappy games that cell phones and mp3 players have always had, but the games actually look good...really good. I'm looking for some people who have them. How are they? What games do you play on them? Also, does anyone know of any deals or the best place to buy one. Thanks.

Just so you know, the current iPod touch models have more differences than just storage size; the 8gb model is from the previous generation, with half the ram and older CPU/GPU.

The improved specs of the 32gb and 64gb models are important, since you mention you want to play games.

That's the biggest bullshit I've ever seen. Cut-throat, backstabbing dickery.

Um, it's very clear that the 8GB model is the second gen and the other is 3rd Gen. There is no 8gb 3rd gen.

Crap. The 8 gig is what I wanted. Does this mean that I won't be able to play certain games on the second gen. that the third gen. will be able to play?

    No.

Unless it's a game that for some reason requires Open GL ES 2.0

Generally though, most developers seem to make games that work across as many models as possible.

But shit dude, just get the third generation. It is so much faster and better, definitely worth the money. And really it's not that much extra.

Of course, you could always wait for the 4th generation models, due out in about a month.

I have a 3rd generation 32gb, and i love it. I rarely use it for music at all really. Mostly for the calender, mail, weather and other stuff. Here's what i'm running on mine at the moment.

    Stanza (books)
    Wikipedia offline (for pub games)
oMaps (for when i get lost in town, offline maps)
Byline (a RSS reader that grabs from Google Reader)
    iReddit
    Dictionary!
Dishy, Epicurious, Allrecipes and BigOven (food applications)
Comiczeal (hands down the best comic book reader i've ever used)
Convert Units (can convert anything to anything, handy for my beer brewing)
    Metronome
    Facebook

What makes either of you think Apple's about to release a new iPod Touch so soon?

    (1) There are credible rumors for an Apple media device event to take place later this month (January 26th, I think). A lot of folks think it will be tablet-related, but it would also be a convenient time for a refresh on the iPod Touch, especially since

    (2) The lackluster iPod Touch update a few months back (which only updated the CPU and not much else) was rumored to be the result of design/manufacturing issues related to including additional hardware into the Touch (specifically some sort of camera). The intervening months should have given them time to sort some of the issues out.

Anyway, almost everyone expects some sort of Touch update in early 2010, the question is just how early in 2010. Personally I'd wait to see what (if anything) comes out of the rumored event before shelling out for an iPod Touch. Even if you don't want the new features, new models would probably be accompanied by a price-cut on the older models. And if nothing actually happens... well, at least you didn't wait _that_ long.

There is an event on January 26 that will be a major product announcement.

Since I'm willing to eat my own balls if Apple launches a tablet device, it will probably just be the next iPod Touch revision.

There have also been sightings in App meta-data that shows Apple devs have been using next generation devices to run some currents apps from the store, including the next iPhone, which is due this summer.
