The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
But it's true, and it is without a doubt the best PAX DVD set we have ever produced, to the point where we are considering making THIS the official one. Forever.
For once I can agree, I'm really glad to see you guys have 2 Player Productions working on this. I haven't been too impressed with the last two sets, but this looks really promising. Great job!

I thought the last two sets were great, especially the 2007 with the Main documentary by Mega64.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they were bad or anything, and the crews that worked on them deserve a lot of credit, it's time consuming work putting these things together. I just notice little things and have a desire for more content, which it looks like there's going to be this time around. The "more content" part was one reason I started my project, which I'd like to get more community involvement in now.

This thread is relevent to my interests.
I just shared the Gabe and Tycho QnAs from the PAX 2007 DVD with some friends during our road trip.
They did not fail to please and amuse.
True, with as much stuff that happens at PAX the other sets have been lacking in actual content and a certain "feel" for the event overall. The Mega64 stuff was only fun for people who are fans of Mega64. It was a way for them to get additional exposure at PAXs expense, imho.

Ordering my copy right now!! I'm glad this became available so soon.
Does anyone know if the 50% off older DVDs works after I submit my order or do I have to buy them at the same time? I can interpret the 01/11/10 update two ways haha.
EDIT: It would seem that you have to buy them at the same time. Poor me
I had read on the main page that the 2009 PAX DVD will probably be the last. As a long time Penny Arcade fan I am begging the powers that be not let this happen. You may say that the 2009 DVD is definitive and could never be topped, but there's one thing that it won't be. It will never be my PAX.
I've always wanted to go to PAX but have never been able to due to time restrictions, money, distance, or other factors. But I know that the first year I am able to, I WILL be going. There is no if, and, or but about it. I am going. And when I do go, you can bet that I'm going to want to remember the whole damn experience, and I'll pay good money to remember it too. I know it may be expensive and a huge hassle to produce, but I really think the fans who were there will love it if there was some way to document the unique experience of PAX every year. Maybe you don't need to make a 6-disc set every year, but just a little something that we can pop into the DVD player whenever we want and say "I remember that year. That one was AWESOME."
If anyone else feels the same, please post in this thread. And if there is some other reason why you guys won't be making future DVDs, please let us know. I really hope you won't stop them. Thanks.
Maybe you make one more, with East on it, since East is a first?

After just reading the front page, I see that Mike did say they might not make any more. This is likely by far the best set they have made so far but this move still surprises me. However, if that's the case, then my crew will just have to improve the work we do and grow larger. Click the banner in my signature for details on the project I run. It's essentially a lower-quality-yet-more-content community-driven version of the official DVD. We're planning for PAX EAST and PRIME this year and the years to come, so if they stop producing an official DVD set, then people will at least have ours.
The whole thing still surprises me though... I'm glad you pointed it out anyway.

I was gonna write something about how I don't think this should be the last dvd, but you said everything I wanted to say, and you said it better than I ever could.
Keep the dvd's coming, please. We will continue to pay you for them.
So I was going to order this, but I need to know this first: Is it region free? I live in Europe (PAL, region 2 I think), so if it's region 1 they're no good to me. Have the past ones been region free? thanks

Is there a full rundown of every feature on the DVDs? Is there any footage from the Pitch You Videogame panel?
The description on the shop page sounds complete. Unfortunately we did not have the time during the event to cover the panels, though i'm sure other groups may have.
I hope they won't show me sleeping!
I fell asleep at one of the panels and woke up to a camera right in my face! I don't know if that's one of the cameras used for the DVD.
Mine just got here! I have been tracking that thing like mad online. It is taking all my will power to not watch it until my husband gets home form work.

So far, only complaint is the sometimes terrible angles during the concerts. I mean, look at the balloons in the crowd once, maybe twice, but not fifteen times. Also, the crowd is almost pitch black, why cut to them so often?
I had the same thing happen as Mentok. A few discs didn't stay secure in shipping and came falling out when I opened the case. Weirdest packaging ever. Other than that it is pretty good. Yay for being on camera for a few seconds. That's right everyone, I am completely famous.

Somebody told me I was visible on the DVD during the Wil Wheaton Awesome Hour. Is there any truth to this rumor? I haven't ordered my set yet, because other things need paying for first.

This is unfortunate. The disc trays are a new design that are supposedly more resistant to breakage during shipping. Hopefully this problem won't effect too many people, but please everyone be careful opening your set just in case.

Mine was not broken. The design is interesting but some discs broke loose from their retention devices.
It happens with more traditional designs as well.

I am pretty sure I saw you in there. Our buttons are on Jerry's neck for the entire show btw...
I can be seen asking my question to Scott and Mike at the beginning of the Make a Strip panel and
you can spot me during the first round of the Omegathon.
Our copy arrived yesterday, with only one of the discs having moved during shipping. Finally got to see the Q&A session we missed while waiting in line for Wil Wheaton, as well as the early rounds of the Omegathon.
Good stuff, now I'm even more ready for it to be March...
When I opened the casing, all but two discs were strewn about. Didn't hold very well, but no damage.
Neat packaging, though.
A little disappointed that they didn't record the encores for the Coulton show.
I was pretty disappointed by that as well, but they may not have been able to include the encore because he did other artists songs. I so very much want his cover of Birdhouse In Your Soul...

I highly suggest downloading the recording of his 10/10/2009 Park West performance. Someone recorded the entire thing, including the Flood show by him and Paul & Storm. I went to this show, it was amazing. The recording was plugged directly into the soundboard with permission by Coulton.
Very worth it. Right before Mr. Fancy Pants, you'll hear two people in the audience yell "YARRRR"... that's my friend and I :P
---
But yeah, I guess since he did Sweet Caroline and whatnot... might not be kosher to put on the DVD. I got a very good recording of the encores from PAX (I was as close as you could possibly be to the stage), so my YouTube channel has those if you're interested in seeing them again.
Edit: Oh, and here's a picture of the DVD's as I received them. Thumbnail goes to larger pic

Just got mine today, it's totally awesome BUT I do have one complaint. The audio on Freezepop is way quieter than the rest of the the concert sets I've watched.
The DVD set is pretty good, but I'm very disappointed that the Jonathan Coulton concert was cut off.
Come on, "Mr. Fancy Pants" was one of the highlights of that show! What gives? If the issue is royalties for sampling and covers, then why did I hear "The Final Countdown" in a couple of the features?
