This all totals around $700, which is a lot more than I wanted to spend, but I want this to be a solid gaming rig for a while.
1. Are all these parts compatible?
2. Anything you see that isn't that good?
3. Are there any combos or alternate parts that would be better and/or cheaper?
Those are pretty solid as far as i can tell. The Intel Core i5-750 come highly recommeded right now but are $30 more and you would have to switch Motherboards (this article is about the best motherboards to support the i5 in that price range). On the other hand at that price point the Phenom is still a solid choice.
Thanks guys! I'm not sure how I could get a hold of a student copy of Win7.
Aren't the Core2Quads much more expensive?
Quad core is not gonna bring much extra performance wise as not much software is made for it. This will change over time but for now it's better to spend money on other stuff.
Have you had any thoughts with regards to overclocking and making the machine silent? Also consider finding the money for a SSD C-drive. I replaced a 10,000 rpm drive with a Intel SSD and it almost cut boot time and game loading times in half.
Yes. 20+4 can be used for 20 and 24 pin mobos. 585 is probably much more than you actually need. Most PSU's nowadays come standard with 6-pin GPU connector. You should find out what PSU is in there so you can be sure though. You could always just in case buy a few-dollar converter for a basic 4-pin. Sometimes GPUs bundle one of these converters, which you should also check.
I'm not really knowledgeable on building a computer, but the Penny Arcade Computer Build Thread is full of friendly people who can probably throw some good advice at you.

and any reason why you're going with AMD instead of an intel setup? the Core2Duos and Core2Quads have been kicking AMDs ass for some time now

Also, aren't SSD drives incredibly expensive?
Ok, this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131402
Says it requires a 24 pin connector?
This case comes with a 585 watt powersupply that has a 20+4 pin connector. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121097
Will they work together? Also, is 585 watts enough power?
Oh and the GPU (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161317) requires a 75w 6 pin connector, but I don't know if that PS in the case has that..?
meh, I did it for you:
Your GPU comes with the converter, so you're set.
