Spirit Tracks got me pumped to play a trading sim game. Something where I buy goods at some place, transport them across the dangerous and interesting game world, and sell them for a profit (hopefully).
I know of about a million games that include this basic feature but not many that focus on it, and definitely not such a personal way as Spirit Tracks does. OpenTTD and Railroad Tycoon are far too hands-off for what I'm looking for.
What I'd like to play is something with the above mentioned trading, plus some kind of research and development to make my vehicle/vessel better able to transport more and various cargoes.
The new Pirates! did this somewhat but it's a pain in the ass with all the bullshit minigame stuff and mutiny and ground combat.
Instead of commanding a big ship or fleet of ships/trains/airplanes I'd much rather be a lone businessman.
So anyway, on with the suggesting. I have a great PC and most console hardware worth having sans PS3. Gaming vintage is not important, but accessibility is. I'd rather not spend a few hours reading tutorials but will if the games are awesome enough.
Basically, do my research for me and report back.

Traveling across europe selling meat and pickled fish. While fending off pirates. Fun!

the end.
Failing that... have you considered doing some actual, real-life day-trading on the stock market?
From his descriptions I'm guessing Eve would not be be worth it. :P
Also, civilization has trading. And colonizations. Both awesome.
Seriously though, Patrician 3 is pretty much the only game I can think off that focuses on trading almost entirely.
Edit: I guess Dopewars is actually the version I've played the most, as Drugwars was intended for TI Calculators.
But have you considered Style Savvy? It's more about managing a store's inventory, but I've heard good things about it...

About EVE having a monthly fee, check the EVE thread out, several people have 21 day trials up for grabs, and if you're really into trading, you can pay your subscription with the in-game currency quite easily.

I only ever played the base game, but I've heard that the expansions added quite a lot to the game.
I think I'd like to play around with day-trading in the stock market, but never found a way to do it that made it fun and easy. Like I just put in the money I want to use, and then start trading around stocks. Any suggestions?
Well, day trading is a suckers game, even Eve will be more fun and cheaper, IMO.

Mm, also a bit more pointless. No matter how successful I become in EVE I won't see that shit for real.
Day trading can't be much worse than blackjack or poker I think.
Casino Poker is a pretty good analogy in that you are in a zero sum (in the short term) contest with the house taking a cut.
So just look around the table and decide who the sucker is.
To be fair you could do worse than putting some money in a short term trading account and playing around. You might learn something for sure. Just don't make it a substitute for your main, long term, investing. Stocks will be a lot better than commodities, since that really is a zero sum game and you are, for instance, making bets on the supply and demand of hogs against both the farmers and the hot dog makers.

I was going to suggest this or 1701. I haven't played 1404 yet, but loved 1701. The focus is more on trading with your own colonies to sustain your main colony and building up your cities and outposts. It's a terrific game and I've lost entire evenings without realizing it.

Wow hey, this is pretty neat, if a bit expensive for what it is.
I've had an old shareware version of it sitting around for at least 10 years now. With enough people it's actually incredibly fun.
That said, I'm pretty bad at it.
This is the first thing that came into my mind, but I consider EVE to be a natural evolution to that. Even though I've never played any of those two
Space Rangers is the best game for this. And the intro is hilariously [strike]bad[/strike] awesome.
I just bought this from Steam, thanks for the heads up on the sale.
Now to see if I can actually get into this time...the learning curve kills me.
Man, I love X3. It's so freaking awesome to start off with nothing, go find a pirate or 7, steal a Nova, sell a Falcon or 3, and then start up a few universe traders. I just wish the game would keep running alt-tabbed, then you could do some really sick stuff.
The expansion was a bit broken. Getting a Xenon invasion was fun, until you spent 12 or 13 REAL LIFE hours fighting off legions of Xenon Ks and Ps. Still, I cannot stress how much better the interface is in the expansion is. It has icons that tell you when random stations and whatnot have work for you. The original doesn't. So if you wanted to find, say, a trading mission, or a Xenon invasion mission, you had to fly the SLOW route over to each station and pray you found one.
I'm interested in a more personal game than most of these though. Along the lines of Freelancer and Privateer is what I'm looking at, not managing a fleet of automated traders in X3 or colonies in an Anno game.
I guess the main thing I'm looking for here is direct control for personal gain, both in money and power. It may be that I just have to play Gemini Gold again. I still need to take a look at a couple of titles here that I haven't tried yet.
The trading aspect of Escape Velocity Nova becomes irrelevant pretty quickly, especially since the prices never change. I found a planet that bought/sold the same good as its moon, but for a different price. You don't have to have a huge profit margin on something when you don't have to move your ship in order to land on your destination.
Aye, this is what I experienced with EV:N when it came out. Fucking great game but not really what I'm in the mood for.
Anyone that's played Flatspace 2 care to give some impressions?
good old Privateer.... MAN those were the days.
edit: oh wait, didn't have much of a trade mechanic per-say, did it?
A fairly old game, but you do trade a fair bit in it.
Re: X3 -- Does this game have bounty hunters or people who will chase you across the galaxy for deeds that you have done?
