I was introduced to a new board game (well, new for me) called Settlers of Catan over the winter holiday... I saw there is a version of it on xbox live just called Catan, but it looks like it came out over two years ago... Before I drop ten bucks on it, does anyone know if there is still a decent online community for the game, or am I gonna be stuck playing against AI?

Thanks a lot. Searched for any info on this but it didn't look like there was a thread...

I've not tried recently, but a few months ago tried very hard to find some games of it online and failed completely. Indeed, it seems outside of a 3-6 month window all the popular board games that go onto Live become quite devoid of players.

for $10 I'd say still go for it. I found playing against the AI still enjoyable

I picked up the Arcade version years ago, and liked it quite a bit. Can't really tell you what the online community is like though, as I gave up on it eventually since something like 50% of the games I would play would end with me being disconnected and finishing up against AI opponents.

Never happened to me with any other game, and this wasn't on wireless. I would just lose connection at least every other game whenever I tried to play, over a period of at least 6 months. The game has wretched netcode, apparently.

I see... Kind of disappointing. I'll probably still buy it though, if anyone ever wants to get into a game let me know.

I think you'll find there are still people here that would be more than willing to hop on for a game of Settlers with you. And honestly, who wants to play with people not from PA, anyway?

It's quite a good version of Catan. Mind you it'd be hard to fuck it up, but still.

The AI is decent too, doesn't willingly let you kill it.

The AI is fine, but, really, Catan is all about player interaction. Honestly, even with non-AI, the digital version is significantly less fun than the tabletop edition.

The upside to only playing the AI however is when you win you don't have to sleep on the couch.

You can find several communities of people playing boardgames online like BrettspielWelt which includes Catan.

My main complaint about the AI is it goes from "YES, LET ME GIVE YOU ALL MY CARDS FOR 1 BRICK" to "You have 1 more victory point than the rest of us, you aren't getting anything EVER".
