So my heater died. It just makes a puff sound when I try to turn it on. I'm checking the fuses now but could it be anything else? One mechanic says it's the actuator without even considering electrical... that will run me 1k.
Am I being fooled. Also sorry for the broken seeming sentences, my 'e' key is sticking.
Well, in my 93 Escort, there was a connection under the glovebox that ended up going bad. The heater and fan were fine, but the connector was loose, so it wouldn't come on. I was able to tighten the connector with some pliers. Might not be your problem, but it might be worth checking.
Usually the big expense with heaters is the labor. You often have to pull apart most of the dashboard to get at the thing and then you find out it's a five-cent resistor or a $3 switch that needs replaced.
If you leave it at a mechanic and have him diagnose the problem, you are already on the hook for the labor to take the dash apart so you pretty much have to pay what he says to fix it and put it back together. So choose your mechanic wisely, ask around for recs and ask up front what you'll have to pay if you decide the heater isn't worth the cost to repair.
