Hi guys, can't believe another PAX is almost around the corner! Here's some info for newcomers as well as some info on changes for the PAX East game.
What is Assassins?
Assassins is a live-action convention game where you are tasked with finding specific target players while trying to avoid players trying to find you. Finding your target "assassinates" that player, preventing them from being able to assassinate other players and represents a "kill". Your goal is to assassinate as many players as possible before you are eliminated or the game ends.
How it works
In our version of Assassins you are given a kit with everything you need to play. The main item in your kit is your player badge. Your badge has a symbol on it that represent you in the game, and is what other players will look for. Click the spoiler tag below for an example of a badge and more information badges.
Your kit will also contain a smaller card with a different symbol on it. This card is called a KillTag and the one in your kit identifies your starting target. Any player whose badge displays the shape of your current KillTag
regardless of the shapes color is a potential target. Click the spoiler tag below for an example of a KillTag and more information on finding your targets.
When you find a player with a matching symbol, you "assassinate" them and take their current target, starting the hunt over again... and again... until only the most skilled remain.
Assassinations are verbal and unlike the old school games there are no weapons or props used.
If you're unfotunately eliminated, all is not lost. Though you're no longer able to eliminate players, you may still attack them secretly, slowly but surely gaining points.
More info on the games rules and scoring can be found
here. If you have any questions post them here and I'll answer them.
To the victor goes the spoils AKA Booty!
An optional element of the game is to carry around a small item to give to your assassin. Preferably something you can give to all ages but nothing fancy.
PAX East Assassins
To play in the PAX East game, you'll need to go to our
website and purchase a kit. Kits are $4.50 or $5.50 plus shipping. The difference between the kits is the size of the armband you receive, everything else is the same. The $4.50 kit is a smaller armband where the $5.50 kits sports a bigger armband that will fit most everyone.
The cost of the kit is comprised of the material costs only. Shipping is $1.50 per kit, but is capped at the US Flat Ship Postal Rate for different locales, which means once your order enough kits shipping stays the same. i.e. In the US 4 kits will max out the shipping at $4.80.
Kit Upgrades
Just added a new page to let players from the Assassins 09 game upgrade provided they kept and are happy with the size armband they have. Upgrading gives you everything in the kit but the badge holder. The badge holder makes up the largest amount of the kits price and if you've already got one we didn't see any reason to make you buy another one.
Upgrade kits are $2.50 plus shipping. To upgrade log in to the site and go
here.
Note: You'll only be able to upgrade your kit if you registered for the Assassins 09 game, otherwise that option will be hidden. If you've already ordered a new kit but want to upgrade, let me know by PM and I can do some magic to make that happen.
Prizes!
So we like to give away a prize to the person who has the highest score at the end of the game. In the past we've given away some Chrome messenger bags we picked up awhile back. Well we've run out of bags, so we had to come up with something else going forward.
So for the PAX East game the winner (i.e. the person with the highest score) will get a 3-day PAX pass to the future PAX of their choosing.

If I may make a suggestion to keep sanity from the local authorities, I would highly suggest informing the Boston PD and the Hynes Convention Center staff about the game first, and the rules.
That way when the PD sees some dude lurking in the shadows they don't go crazy. They get pretty wound tight in conventions here, and it's better safe than sorry.

I'm not going to pax east so I suppose I have to wait until September.

I actually like the idea. I'd play but I'll be too easy to find as I'll be in the same area most of the time. I simply say to be cautious.

This will be the first game run on the East coast, but we've run this at the last 2 PAXs with no security problems. Running fromplayers is strictly against the rules and is pointless anyway since you'll never know who is looking for you.
I really doubt we'll have any problems since we've done this for the past couple years now at pax prime with no problems...
P.S. I'm totally in! :P

Outside of that, as I said, I'd join you in this, but I'd be way too easy to find as I'd be in the same area most of the time. For people roaming around the entire convention center, though, this is a great idea.

Hopefully this time I won't do something stupid like arrange a meetup with Arco to get my post-Pax dinner ticket, and remind him that I'm playing the game so he can promptly kill me.

[edit] ordered!
Just added a new page to let players from the Assassins 09 game upgrade provided they kept and are happy with the size armband they have. Upgrades kit are $2.50 plus shipping. To upgrade log in to the site and go here.

Kit Giveaways
Now for something completely different. When we ran Assassins for the first time in Seattle, we covered the costs for players because we wanted to see how the game would turn out. As much as we'd like to do something like that for our first PAX East game the pricing of the badge holders and my own financial situation make that impossible.
That being said, I do have some leftover badge holders of both sizes from last years game and I'd like to have some contests to give these away to get more people exposed to the game. I'm working on an idea for some forum-based Assassins but wanted some input you guys on how I should give these out.
Upgrading gives you everything in the kit but the badge holder. The badge holder makes up the largest amount of the kits price and if you've already got one we didn't see any reason to make you buy another one. I'll update the OP to include this.
Certain areas are considered off-limits for attacking other Assassins players. When a player is in one of these areas they cannot be eliminated. Below is a list of the safe zones in Assassins:
* Keynotes and Panels
* Concerts
* BYOC and PC Freeplay Areas
* Hotel Rooms
* Convention Tournaments
* Bathrooms
I've never been to PAX or any other gaming convention so I'm a little fuzzy about some of these areas. What do keynotes and panels include? Also what about Freeplay areas?
