UMDs in the wild.

So I know that Sony's push for the UMD medium movies-wise has more or less been a bomb, yes. However, I just picked up a PSP, and I was going to pick up a movie or two if they were decently priced ($4.99-$14.99) However, I'm finding that they're impossible to find. Have all B&M stores stopped carrying them period?; will I have to turn to eBay for these things?

I've checked Target last night, and I saw a grand total of two movies, Click, and something else I don't remember and don't want. (Unless I was looking in the wrong area.)

I checked 2 Wal-Marts, neither carried any, again, unless I was looking in the wrong place.

And, Best Buy & Gamestop carried them, but both of their selections were pitiful at best.

The problem with UMDs is that ripping movies to memory stick is pretty damned easy.

True, but I'd rather pay $14.99 for a copy of a movie I really like than having it take up half of my memory card.

    I still see them everywhere.

Are you sure you're looking in the right section? A lot of stores have moved UMD movies over with DVDs instead of with the PSP games.

I work in a smaller Best Buy and we have about 60 or 70 titles available. They are over with the movies, not with the games.

$80 will buy you a 4GB which can hold 3 movies at UMD quality... (actually not sure if the 480x270 movie player still exists...)

i just cant see myself ever buying another umd movie when i can have my whole dvd collection for $80 instead.

Wait...that was an argument for Memory cards? Because you just said it would cost $80 for a card that holds $3 movies when UMD's run about $15 a piece.

    That doesn't make sense.

But you can later delete those movies and add others from your collection.

If 4GB holds your entire DVD collection then damn you don't have a very large DVD collection.

Also, where the fuck are you finding 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duos at $80? I always see them at $160+ USD.

They should include free UMD's in Blu-ray packs to promote both formats or something :( -- the prices are insane. Ideally it would be with DVD's but I don't see this happening.

Most companies have stopped carrying UMDs. Gamestop is getting out of them, I know.. a few stores have been designated "dump stores" (I'm one of the lucky ones  ), so we get piles and piles of them from other stores.

In the end, UMD was an ok idea, but completely worthless. They tended to be more expensive than DVDs, with no special features, and you can't watch them on your TV. And, like others have said, you can rip DVDs to your DUOs, and be done with it.

Hehe, I still have my original Spiderman 2 UMD from way back when.

    Ironically, I've never watched it.

I remember I bought Napolean Dynamite from Comp USA if that helps.

Target stopped carrying them a long time ago, for some reason we were still sent copies of Click, Little Man, and one other movie.

I got Pulp Fiction and Hero for 15 bucks each on some Best Buy sale with coupons, and they're pretty cool for that price, but don't just buy an UMD move to for the purpose of buying a UMD movie-look to see a sale or something advertised that you want first. Memory sticks ftw, too.

I noticed my FYE (same as Strawberries and a few others) were having all UMD's for 9.99 this weekend, maybe an ongoing sale. They had a pretty good selection too.

But... they're flash media, so you can simply remove the video you've watched and put new ones on.

Do you just buy a new ipod when your old one fills up?

    Also... $3 movies?

Also, we have these things called "Hard Drives" that you can put large repositories of data on, which are compatible with these "memory cards".

I think it might even be able to "copy" this data to the "memory card". But that might just be a load of science fiction.

Gamestop/EBGames actually only carries about 1/3 of what's been released on UMD. Around here at least, Best Buy has the widest selection and best prices on them.
