Video card and/or display adapter problems

So I built this computer maybe 2-3 years ago. It's been working with no problems for that time.

This morning I played some L4D2 for maybe and hour and then I go to open up World of Warcraft and the whole thing freezes for a few seconds before crashing to the Blue Screen of Death. Computer restarts itself, but the video is messed up. The screen resolution is back at default and I get a message that says -

"Incompatible display adapter has been disabled. At least one adapter on the system has been disabled because it's driver is not compatible with the VGA adapter."

I reset the screen to it's original resolution. I'm still able to browse the web and what not, but most of the games I have on the computer will not run anymore. Attempting to play WoW again, I get the message: "Failed to find a suitable display device".

I check the device manager and look at my video cards where it tells me "Windows had stopped this device because it has reported problems".

So I'm guessing the problem is the video card/s. I click "update driver". It searches for a few seconds, then tells me my drivers are already up-to-date. The problem persists, so I click "roll back driver" and restart the computer. During the boot-up process I'm asked to make a couple of selections that kinda confuse me as I'm not sure what I'm being asked or even what some of the selections are. I simply choose the first of every selection. This, of course, has not solved the problem.

Additionally, one of the fans inside the tower is running much more loudly and/or quickly than normal.

I don't know what happened here or how to fix it. I've not made any recent changes to the computer at all. It just... broke... for no apparent reason.

Information which may or may not be relevant:

Video cards: Two NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512
Motherboard: EVGA nForce 750i SLI
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit.

Any help anyone could provide is appreciated. At the moment I don't even know what's wrong with it, let alone how to repair the problem.

    This happens.

Since you have two cards try running with just one to see if one of the adapters failed.

I'm not sure how to set it to just run with the one. Ever since I got the blue screen the normal method by which I reach the nVidia control panel has dissapeared. Typically I would get there by right clicking on the desktop and using the shortcut menu, but the option has just up and vanished.

I finally managed to get there via the computer control panel, but the normal video card options (like enableing/disabling SLI, anistropic filtering, etc.) are gone. The only subsection of the nVidia control panel I see is "Configure FirstPacket Settings", whatever that means.

However the listing for each video card on the device manager has the a little yellow "!" next to it with the message "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems."

Also, though I can't seems to find it again, I believe at one point a message popped up saying that the device wasn't working properly because Windows was unable to load the required drivers. Seems significant. I just don't know how to get Windows to load the driver or why it stopped loading in the first place, if indeed that's even the root of the problem.

Perhaps one of the video cards got fried or something, but what're the chances that both bought it? I tried switching the monitor's cord to the other card but it's not getting any output at all on that one.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep tryin'

If it were me, I'd do this. Put one card in the primary video card slot. F8 to boot in VGA mode. Manually remove all video drivers. Reboot. Attempt to install the drivers. Check for errors.

If it fails, start from the beginning with the other card. If that works, then try to add the second card with SLI and see what you get.
