Magnets and Credit Cards

so one of the attorneys at my firm gave me a nice leather money clip for the holidays, presumably to keep all the cash monies i am not earning in something that's pocket-friendly.

unfortunately, the clip itself is kept closed by two magnets. think of a strip of leather folded around two pieces of stiff cardboard, with two magnets of opposing poles at each end. the whole thing folds up and the magnets keep the ends together.

i would like to use this clip because it's a nice gift and pretty handy. but i don't know if i can use it with money AND debit and credit cards, because i'm afraid the magnets will screw up the mag strips on my cards. i did some googling, and of course the internet yields a variety of, uh, dubious opinions.

i figure there's a higher concentration of smart people here, so i turn my question to you, the H/A forumer, can i use this clip with credit/debit cards safely?

I doubt the magnetic field is all that large, as long as you dont hover your card within a centimeter of the magnets, I couldn't imagine it causing damage.

You need an extremely strong magnet to erase a card. You should be fine.

Mythbusters proved you cannot erase a credit card strip with a magnet (except for ones much stronger than you'd ever have lying around), especially not one as weak as what is in a money clip.

I know a bunch of folks that use magnet money clips and none of them have had issues with them fucking up.

Avoid setting them on the old style dealies for that anti theft clips that make loudish gizzzzit nozies when you run the box over them(powerfull enough that if you lay your head on them and set them off you'll see a neat white flash from the emf pulse), shit in partical physics labs, MRIs and cat scans, and you'll be fine.

you mean the devices that send an EM pulse powerful enough to fry the security tags on in-store merchandise?

yeah, i'll try to remember that :P

Also, remember to not use a credit card or any card with a magnet-strip as a bookmark. The de-tattlers erased 4 cards. People tried to raise a ruckus with me but I was lucky that I was able to point out that they could get the card replace for free anyway...

They did this on Mythbusters. You need a pretty damn big magnet to demagnetize a credit card.
