XBOX broken, not 3 rings?

Hey, so my xbox 360 freezes mid-game, with strange vertical lines on the screen and the controller is unresponsive. This occurs 5-20mins into playing any game (tried a few) and happened in the dashboard once. The xbox is superbly ventilated and in a nice cool room (the power supply is as well). I tried all the xbox.com support troubleshooting (the crashes occur with the HDD and wireless adapter unplugged).

Now microsoft wants me to pay ~$150 for the repair since its out of warranty...

If only it was the red rings, it would be free!!! anyone able to help me here?

Similar problems? Can I tell them its red rings? am I screwed?

thanks!

Even if you tell them it's a red ring fault, they'll know it's not when they get it, and they won't fix anything.

OK, just made it crash a bunch of times in a row, and it now shows the three red rings.

Funny how thats the difference between $150 and free.

In the future, keep in mind that you can spend $200 and grab an Arcade, along with a brand new warranty, rather than pay $150 to have Microsoft ship you a refurb.

I was just going to say that you're about an hour or two's gaming time away from a RROD. The errors you described were just what happened to mine before it red-ringed.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the return process, it was pretty pain-free for me.
