So my wife and I have to move in with my parents, due to both of us losing our jobs and being unable to find new ones.
As if this wasn't crappy enough, we just found out that it's gonna cost well over 2 grand to break our lease... Which is pretty crippling considering we spent $1500 of our $1600 savings account on filing the papers to get her legal status changed to permanent resident. The complex was bought out by a large company who is completely unremorseful and if we can't come up with the money before our move out date, they add another $650 onto the fees.
Anyone interested in moving to the DFW area and taking over our lease? haha.
But seriously, if we can find a renter to take it over we only have to pay $100 to transfer the lease and they only have to fulfill the lease term (6 months left) and there's no other wacky deposits or anything since we already paid all that. So we put an ad on craigslist, but are pretty lost as far as what else we could do besides donate too much plasma in order to improve our situation.
Share your horrible apartment management stores to make us feel better.
The apartment complex we rent from is basically complete shit. The apartment is awful, two bedrooms, tiny bathroom, tiny kitchen, medium sized living room, completely unfurnished outside of a stove and refrigerator, and no dishwasher. The furnace blows, the windows aren't properly sealed at all. You can feel a breeze in the living room at all times.
Rent is $674/m right now, last year it was $550/m, next year they are changing rent to $690/m. I really wish I could move to another place but this shitty apartment is one of the cheapest within 10 miles, and I can't afford to drive/park on campus ($250 a quarter for a parking pass).

Man that sucks. I've been lucky in that a friend and I found an excellent 2 bedroom flat which was unfurnished just as my mum sold her house and needed to get rid of damn near everything to buy a new place with her new husband. Rent in lots of places seems to be mental though. This place (which is in an excellent part of town, and with no neighbours, being above a shop and next door to a church) is £475 a month in total, and even then that isn't really cheap for round here.
Me and my GF moved into an Basement apartment in Sept. The Usual Landlord upstairs went away for a few months (Honduras, he's smart.) and left the upstairs, main floor to a woman who will NOT RAISE THE THERMOSTAT past 20, which means it's 18 degrees in the basement ALL THE TIME! I keep calling upstairs to get her to turn it up, but a few days later it's freezing again, and she keeps acting like I said 20 when she needs to set that shit to at least 25 for us to get proper heat down here.
And then she's like "it gets pretty warm up here..." and I'm all like "well open a WINDOW THEN"
anyways
woeeeessss.

like robo said, basements are always colder
you goofed by moving into a basement that doesn't have its own heating and now you expect the woman upstairs to make it too warm where she is just so more of the heat will trickle down to you?
buy a fucking space heater and stop your kvetching
so she has to set her heat to 25 so you can be comfortable?
Yep, at least 23-24 for the basement to be even close to 20
22 is the legal lowest temp.. correct?
so yeah, fuck the rest of the house? If they are too warm... THEY HAVE WINDOWS..
space heater... yeah not when I'm paying the hydro thanks. It's the landlord (thus the main floor tenants) responsibility to keep the house warm. I don't think asking them to keep a few degrees up is unreasonable.
edit* wow nerve hit! I think if y'all were freezing every morning you'd complain too...
My rent went up $800 last year, over a period of a few months.
I used to pay $650.
your rent more than doubled? jesus fuck
OOPS.
I meant up to $800.
Great fuck I am exhausted.
ok, that still sucks but not nearly as much as I first thought! remember where I was living on First Hill? When a new management company took over the building just before I moved, they jacked my rent up like 25%. I mean, perfectly legal and they gave me sufficient notice but that's why I live in Ballard now.

dont forget the newspaper websites too.
if there is a college nearby put out flyers on campus and in coffee shops, go to the admissions office and ask if there is a program or recommended way to reach out to students who want to live off-campus.

if you havea friend in the real estate business, ask if they could do a solid for you have help give you tips to advertise in your local market

I think I want to live on my own but it's not feasible yet.
But considering that I only make a bit over $1k a month and she currently makes about $500 a month we probably will not be moving anytime soon
just call me Dave, Chico
and I just wanna be natural in my own home
When I'm out of college.

It was a good episode though. The one with Booster Gold.

why should the rest of the building have to be boiled alive for you to be comfortable

buy a goddamn spaceheater, good ones can be run for extremely cheap and you shouldn't be running it 24/7 anyways.
That's a massive waste of energy putting it at 25 and then expecting them to open a window.
ps. I'm in fucking Canada? Sweaters and socks only help so much.

hence the jumper comment
Well, once.
I had to dry my couch out because a monsoon hit Ballard 5 blocks from my place. The couch was in a flatbed.
My heating bill is like €50 every 2 months for hot water for shower/washing
Never had to. Stays about 67 in there no matter the temp outside.

Are you suggesting that someone knit a jumper for space?
That would be a very big jumper.
It would take all grannies everywhere.

so they're not out on the streets getting mugged
