So last night I threw a spare computer together with parts I had and hooked it up to my TV. It's running Ubuntu 9.10, and Hulu playback through either the web (tried both Firefox and Chrome), or Hulu Desktop is ridiculously slow. I also tried Boxee but the program in general was slow and I didn't get to test Hulu through it. My main question is if my computer is even up for the task of being a media center, and if things would perform better under Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.
Specs:
2.8Ghz Pentium 4
1.1GB RAM (DDR1 I think)
40GB 7200RPM HDD
Video card is an intel integrated, off the top of my head I don't remember the model, 8-something I think (815)?
Now, I know it's not a powerhouse, but to me that should be able to play internet video. I didn't have enough time last night to do exhaustive tests, but it looked like YouTube was fine. Playing Hulu through the web browser was smooth when embedded, but going fullscreen made it choppy. This isn't an internet connection issue, as again it's smooth anytime it's not fullscreen, and I have it directly connected to my router, not through wireless. Problem is I want it fullscreen cause it's hooked up to an HDTV (through VGA) and running at like 1360x768. I have disabled hardware acceleration through Flash, and it didn't seem to make much of a difference.
I have heard in the past though that Flash support in anything but Windows is generally worse, so if I installed XP on this instead of Ubuntu, would it be better suited? Has anyone got an equivalent or worse computer running these things normally? Is it just Hulu and their implementation of Flash that is so shitty?

There also appears to be a fair amount of people with playback issues with Hulu on their forums, seems to stem from using Flash 10 and up only, and no alternative container like MP4, which is apparently what YouTube has if the FLV won't work, I guess that's how it's viewable on the iPhone when it doesn't have Flash.
It's all very interesting, and pretty frustrating, I'm just trying to make things as smooth as possible because in a month we move to another apartment that doesn't provide cable, so it will be all over the air and internet TV for us.
