is it better to restore or migrate?

most of the tutorials i have seen say to just put the new HDD in with the OS disk ini the drive with teh time machine external plugged in. then do a system restore

versus.

installing snow leopard on new drive then migrating everything over through time machine.

I don't see the real difference - I think they would both get the same result and neither would necessarily be "better"

I agree that they are both very similar. During the OSX install it will ask you if you'd like to restore from a time machine backup. I'd hit "yes".

Unless what you're after is that "new pc feel" and you want to start with fresh settings, but just have access to all your old files... But that doesn't seem to be what you're saying.
