Speaking of books and booksy things, has anyone around here tried that new Hitchhiker's Guide book? The one not by Douglas Adams.

    It just felt wrong

Like a fanfiction with really good grammar, not an actual addition to the trilogy

    is it funny, though?

is it better than mostly harmless, at least?

I liked Fenchurch. Liked the concept of Random, but not so much the implementation. But mostly it's just because of the downer ending. It's like a Choose Your Own Adventure book, except all the successful endings have been torn out of the book leaving you with all paths leading to a single You Lose page.

Wow those Maximum Ride books... I can't believe they are a real thing...

    From the wiki

    "Max
Maximum Ride, or 'Max', is fourteen years and is the oldest of the avian-human hybrids and the leader of the Flock. Her powers include "warp drive" when flying, and breathing under water. She also has a voice in her head that gives her advice.

    Nudge
Nudge is an eleven year old of African descendant. Her real name is Monique and she loves to talk. Also she can hack into computers with her ability to sense leftover emotions and draw metal to her when wanted

    Angel
Angel is the Gasman's six year old blood sibling. She obtains seemingly random powers at random times; for example, breathing underwater, being able to read minds, being able to control minds, and shape-shifting.

    Total
Total is Angel's talking dog, saved from the Institute for Higher Living in the Angel Experiment. He can jump really high and in the second book he reveals that he can talk. In The Protecters, he falls in loves with an Alaskan dog named Akila."

"Book four is mainly about the flock rising against global warming..."

Sooo Planeteers + Xmen + Boxcar Children? My head is spinning.

There's also a manga based off this set of books. I never got into maximum ride. I tried, but I just couldn't.

I guess I prefer his brutal murder mysteries, instead. Maximum Ride was his "pretending to write good comic books" project.

    Oh... my... God...

Why the fuck does a human-bird hybrid breathe underwater?

(or any of that shit, but that in particular)

I'm more amused by the fact that Max is apparently hearing voices. That's like the first sign of being insane I think.

Also, this post totally left out the best one:
    Iggy
Iggy is the sarcastic, wisecracking, member of the flock, who \is slightly younger then Max and Fang. He is blind because of experiments done on his eyes when he was young. His powers include being able to "feel" color. He can also see if the background is white.

So I guess this guy is like on a permanent acid trip?

I also want to know why there are apparently half-human, half-wolves but they are able to grow wings? How the hell do you get wings from a wolf?

Edit: Dear God, they are making a movie! That's a very scary thought...

Yes I have, it was thoroughly enjoyable and I really wish they'd been able to find more of his notes. Also I'm sure you have, but in the off chance you haven't, go find and acquire "Last Chance to See".

    Also also regarding Dune

I had no idea what Dune was before I first watched the David Lynch movie back when I was like 12 or so. I still barely had any idea what Dune was after I first watched the movie.

Then I read the book and enjoyed it immensely. Many many years later I picked up and watched the mini-series and while it did a far superior job at following the story and explaining the actions of the characters if you hadn't read the book, I didn't enjoy it as much because of the costumes, the set and production just screamed low budget made for TV practically Canadian in their artificial-ness.

I only say that now because (probably due to the order in which I was exposed to the "franchise" to begin with, the images from the movie are generally what stick in my mind. The exception being the weirding way from the movie, that... was,at least according to the novel, not what Frank Herbert intended.

Nah. There was a residual poison given to him that woudl kill him if he stopped taking the antidote, but there was no mention of him having to milk anything for it.

The first Maximum Ride book was decent young adults' literature, but the further along the series goes, the worse it gets, and I could barely read the book which was entirely about saving the environment

Spoiler: the villains in that one die in a hurricane, which was ostensibly caused solely because of global warming and not, you know, because big hurricanes hit Florida from time to time
