New downloadable content for the Xbox 360 exclusive “Gears of War" is on the way and what better way to celebrate the New Year than to meet friends new and old online and greet them with the sounds of a chainsaw? Sponsored by the Discovery Channel, the complimentary new content will be available for download via Xbox Live Marketplace early Thursday morning, January 11.
By now most of the current maps have been memorised, analysed and brutalised, but this map pack will feature two new maps including one where players fight around a downed King Raven helicopter.
Below, please find descriptions of the new maps:
* Raven Down: A Raven Helicopter has gone down in the middle of a large scale battle with the omnipresent Locust Horde. Gears have taken out the Seeder and gamers join Delta Forces moving into the crash site from all angles to search for survivors.
* Old Bones: In an attempt to eradicate any traces of human history and culture, the Locust Horde has emerged under Sera’s Capitaline Museums and has begun to destroy them brick by brick. Each gamer’s mission is to help the Delta Force recapture the museums before all remnants of humankind’s existence are obliterated.
Additionally, the Discovery Channel will be giving away an unprecedented two million Microsoft Points for use on Xbox Live Marketplace. Gamers can visit www.readyaimfire.com to learn more about how they can qualify to win from January 13th.

DETAILS
A Gears of War update should start pushing through the system at some point tomorrow, Tuesday January 9, 2007 prior to the two new multiplayer maps being available on Xbox Live Marketplace on Wednesday January 10, 2007.
The maps, plus an introductory video featuring Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski, are free thanks to the kind sponsorship by the Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series which launches next Monday January 15th, 2007. Be sure to check out the show to see some really cool firepower. I expect game designers all across the country will be watching the Future Weapons series very carefully looking for ideas for their future games
Here is a list of what was addressed in this update:
• Fixed aspect ratio distortion when using VGA cable with 4:3 displays at resolutions higher than 640x480
• Fixed voice issue with new players joining Player Match games in progress
• Players can now get the Achievement for "Dish Best Served Cold" when using Troika turret to kill RAAM
• Fixed rare situation where host could loop countdown and never start match
• Fixed rare situation where players could get stuck after chainsawing in multiplayer
• Reduced Grenade Tag melee distance
• Enabled “Strict†NAT check on host to prevent possible connection issues
• Optimized server browser queries to return results more quickly and prevent scroll bars from hiding quality of service icons
• Reduced number of possible revives in Execution to match Warzone
• Removed host name from Ranked match server browser
• Disabled security cameras in Ranked matches
• Ranked matches now require balanced teams (3v3 or 4v4)
• Increased penalty for quitting a Ranked match to -50 points
• Added additional cheat detection code
• Additional housekeeping updates
BTW, click here to check out Discovery Channel's Future Weapons series. Be sure to check out the Weapons Zones and see some of the amazing things they showed last season. There was a huge email thread going around Epic about the Metalstorm (which they say is the "potentially the world's most powerful automatic weapon"). It is lacking a chainsaw for close-up combat but it is still pretty cool

"This is legit. The Gears update will go out over Xbox Live before the downloadable content is available. We'll post some more information about this in the morning."
Yes!!!
Just a little too steep for me to jump aboard to play this game.
Hopefully I can find a used copy fairly soon.
...
You know I liked it when I paid money for a game and that was the conclusion of the exchange of my resources for their product. Oh I know, this is free and all that, but it just makes me feel dirty that its so commercial.

the one thing i will give gears though is i still have to play enough to get "The Nuge" achievement.
Have fun with your... cool chainsaw guns and grenade tagging.. and.. damn I've gotta go buy a 360 and GoW.
I don't think there's enough patching in the world that could fix that.
Have fun.....while I wait for MS to fix my 360 because they can't build a console that doesn't have huge failure rates. :x
Also, what kinda things would they add?
They could be the first.
More stuff that's fun. Maybe a fight with that thing with the giant rocket launcher on it's back.
I'm playing that game too, it's annoying I've passed the send the console across the country but I need to spend time grinding so I have enough gold so that the blacksmith can repair my console before I can play, wait for the console to show up at my house.
Satans..... hints.....
Maybe they could come up with new ideas for the sequel? It might be hard in such a generic game I guess.
As much as I loved the game, I am really curious what they are going to do for the sequel in terms of new stuff, I'm scratching my head trying to figure it out.
Satans..... hints.....
The single player is really great, but not $60 of great.
