PDA won't charge

I have an IPAQ rx5915 that I've owned for about two to three and a half years. I know that the battery had been dying, and being busy with law school, I neglected to charge the thing. This, apparently, is a stupid thing to do.
Recently I tried to charge the battery. I noticed it didn't charge (represented by an amber light. It's not lighting up at all). I thought "okay, buy a replacement battery." I get a new batter, so far it's the same thing.
HP wants to charge me $250+ to repair an item that cost me roughly $450.
What should I do here? Any suggestions? The thing has only been charging for two hours, but I'd be interested in my options in case it just won't charge. I obviously can't afford the $250, so that really isn't an option. A cheaper repair service might be, however.
