intermittent freezing of mouse

Running Vista 64bit w/ Logitech MX500 mouse.

It seems to only occur when I'm playing a game through steam. I haven't noticed it freeze on my desktop. Basically, I retain all button functionality of the mouse but am unable to actually move the cursor around. It locks up for roughly 2-3 seconds and then works just fine. The cause seems totally random. It may just be my mouse slowly dying. I've had it for about 5 or 6 years now.

e: also of note, my HDD has a few small bad sectors on it. Could it be freezing because of that?

Are you running special Logitech software for the mouse? You could try going into Task Manager, Processes, right click the Logitech exe file and set the Priority higher (alternatively, set the game you're playing to a lower priority).

Vista doesn't support Logitech's "Mouseware" thing that the MX500 uses. It's too old :(

I'll try lowering the priority of the game and see if that does anything.

I just want to rule out any problems other than the mouse itself to see if a new mouse would be the correct solution.
