It's been a long f**king time since I've watched an anime that I thoroughly enjoyed. Typically, I prefer the bloody, fantastical, and science fiction genres. Ninja Scroll was great. I'm also a huge fan of Vampire Hunter D, Guts from Berserk, Kenshin from Samurai X, and most, if not all, of Hayao Miyazaki's stuff.
The only problem is I'm terrible at staying up to date and apprised of the anime world. I feel similarly helpless when attempting to locate a decent foreign film.
I'd appreciate it if you could you recommend some anime titles and/or websites that help amateurs like me stay informed on recent title and news releases.
The D&D anime thread always has a collection of recommendations in the OP, organized by promoter and description.
Naruto and Bleach are incredibly popular because they started really good, but are kind of running on nostalgia now. I have no idea how they manage to come out with cool shit just frequently enough to keep interest yet can't do it consistently, but there you go. One Piece, on the other hand, started a bit slow most of a decade previous to N or B, so it was passed over as simply better than average when it came out and has an imposing backlog now. It held on by never having a dip in quality (unlike every other series), frequent spikes, and a steady growth, so that it is now the greatest thing ever.
If you like bloody stuff, there's always Gantz (known as semi-decent gore porn, from what I've heard about it) and Elfen Lied seems to be the gold standard for that kind of stuff, as it apparently opens with a young, naked girl tearing a building full of people limb from limb, and just keeps going with that stuff.
If you want free, dubs of Gurren Lagann and Baccano! are available online. The latter should only be seen in English, as they put so much work into getting the voices and accents just right. The former is a pretty average dub, by modern standards, which are pretty high. Both are considered landmark series in the US (Japan wasn't so impressed with Baccano!).
I can't really get into the cartoony stuff, like, Naruto that my little cousin raves about. And, one night about 5 years ago, I watched all episodes of the Record of the Lodoss Wars.
Baccano! is really good, and if you like actiony stuff you might try Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Basilisk, Darker Than Black and Ghost In The Shell (the series not the movie)
Hulu has been really good about putting series up (they have Baccano! and DTB, among others) and you can always check out the Funimation site for more full series

cowboy beebop, Ghost in the Shell, Trigun, xam'd lost memories, Blood +, s-Cry-ed (in order of favorites)
other non science fiction animes that are good
Detective Conan (case closed in america), Samurai Champloo, Bleach, Prince of Tennis (sounds bad but is so good)

If you like dark, urban fantasy/mystery stories with quick, frenetic bursts of well-animated action, and a story that can be interpreted on multiple levels, well then Kara no Kyoukai is for you!
Though I posted action clips, there is a lot of dialogue in this series as well. I'll be the first to say it isn't for everybody; the story is presented non-linear for the first four movies, and the dialogue can be a bit obtuse at times. But it's the kind of thing that rewards multiple viewings and demands interpretation, and it's grown to become my favorite anime movie series.
check out the new re-done hellsing, i have only seen a few of them, but it looked pretty great.
don't watch naruto/bleach crap, they just drag the hell out of those, if you like to be told a good story stay away from the filler anime that never ends. as long as it makes money off of stupid kids they will keep pumping out more episodes, dragonball z style.

Your description of your tastes instantly brings to mind Higurashi no Nuku Koro ni, or When the Cicadas Cry. It's about a really fucked-up town where the same month keeps happening over and over, playing out a little differently each time, and with different points of view involved. It messes with time and perspective and chaos theory, and is incredibly violent - so violent, in fact, that I had a lot of trouble with it as the first season (out of two) became more and more gruesome.
The second season chills out a little, and that's when the anime becomes a real, cohesive story and you begin to learn what's really going on with the place. Check it out if you get around to it.

This is exactly what got me to watch it, along with its entry on TVTropes - I thought the general premise sounded lame at first, but my wife and I ended up watching the entire series back during the summer.
Also, I cannot recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann enough....personally I think the Japanese audio is superior, but the dub certainly isn't bad either.

Cicadas are actually really f**king annoying...and noisy. When I heard the title, it made me think of Graveyard of the Fireflies. Has anyone seen it? I was depressed for about a week after watching it.

I'm not exactly sure about the title, especially because it's often translated "When They Cry." I can only assume it refers to the silence after each ending.
The rest of you, I fucking hate you for the fact that I now have a blue dot on this god awful thread.

Actually, the month that keeps repeating is June, and it's in the southern part of Japan so the climate is near tropical. When they're outside you can often hear them in the background. I think people just don't like bugs, so they changed it for the import.

I highly recommend my favorite series, Now and Then Here and There.
Because ten billion years' time is so fragile,
so ephemeral,
it arouses such a bittersweet,
almost heartbreaking fondness
The story is about a boy named Shu, who comes across a mysterious girl on his way home. He is then accidentally teleported 10 billion years into the future, where everything is a desolate post-apocalyptic wasteland and a mad tyrant rules with an iron fist.
The anime is directed by Akitaro Daichi, and he masterfully crafts an emotional rollercoaster of a series. The show is not afraid to tackle darker themes, such as children soldiers and much more. It is a 13 episode series that is definitely worth watching.
The sequel, Legendz, isn't as good, but check out Now and Then Here and There.
There's some decent stuff on hulu and the funimation website that's free and streaming. Champloo and Devil May Cry on funimation might be of interest. I'm currently watching the old dub of sam X on hulu, not a very good dub, but it's all the episodes and free.
I highly recommend my favorite series, Now and Then Here and There.

Ephemeral. I like that word. Thanks, I'll check it out.
I strongly Recommend Trigun if you like a good, well done anime. (Doesn't quite follow the magna, but still solid).
Other Anime: GTO Great Teacher Onazuko (sp?) I don't remember much aside from this being funny as shit.
Cowboy Bebop one of my favorites of all times, only topped by Trigun.
The movie Knocking on Heaven's Door is quite solid.
Also Evangelion. So rightously fucked up. The final movie is so damn depressing, but its got everything people like, big boobs, a penguin, and giant freaking robots having at it, in not a Gundum way.
What in the hell is going on with some of these clips? Good god. So much awful.
For recommendations, beyond the aforementioned first page of the D&D thread I'd throw out Baccano, Beserk, Gankutsuou, and definitely Basilisk the most because of your Ninja Scroll admiration; its basically Ninja Scroll with better animation, fighting, story, production values, and done as a television series.
And of course the workhorses: Bebop, Champloo, FMA.

Prince of Tennis and Initial D are both guilty pleasures of mine (especially the live action Initial D)
I can't believe I forgot to mention Fullmetal Alchemist, though I would go with FMA: the Brotherhood as it's closer to the manga... and awesome
the rest of the anime I recommended are amazing though and should all be bought
It followed the manga pretty closely, so in the manga
