Flash Player/overheating issues! Help!

I've been having issues since about a week ago. I have a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop and all has seemed well until flash player started having horrible lag on everything, even Youtube. I did many things to try and fix this, including switching to Opera as a web browser, Disabling Java (not Javascript), and reinstalling Adobe Flash Player.

It seemed to be fixed until sunday, when I tried to watch some videos off Funimation's website, and in the middle of the ads, my computer just powered down. No warning or anything, just turned itself off. I figured this was an overheating problem that's not related, my laptop is almost five years old. So I bought a cooling pad to help fix the problem, but a couple nights ago, after watching a few videos in a row, it shut itself off again, once again with no warning at all. Youtube as well as anything not ad-supported runs fine, but things like Hulu and Funimation have really long video pauses where the audio will keep going but the video will stall for a bit and then try to skip ahead and catch up. It's only shut itself off twice, and last night went without incident, but I can't say I trust this system anymore.

TL,DR: Flash was lagging and freezing, tried to fix it, worked fine until computer shut off (I'm thinking it overheated), bought a cooling pad to fix the problem, but if I watch too many flash videos it'll overheat and shut itself off again. What can I do to fix this?

I'm running an HP Pavilion zv6000 with Windows XP and an Athlon 3200+ at 2.0 Ghz, and I think 512 MB of RAM. I've never had a problem like this before until last week.

Install/run something that will tax the processor and video card and see if it shuts down?
