Once I was standing outside listening to the emergency sirens and watching the lovely lighting from a nearby tornado. I went back inside when I saw a bolt go all the way across the sky and stop just above me, but it was nice to see.

Haha, tornadoes. I found this little snip about my town:
Glen Rose-area historical tornado activity is above Texas state average. It is 207% greater than the overall U.S. average.

    I've seen a couple, they're pretty amazing.

I've only see the aftermath and their effects (hail, lightning). One time we had one land close enough for me to feel the wind, but I never saw it.

Well I've only ever seen them at an extreme distance but it was still pretty awe inspiring. Supposedly the street I live on was once named Cyclone Street due to one going down it back in the 40's or something.

I've seen a few Tornados before. Mostly around the Red Deer area, they get a lot in August and July.

Oh, and I saw one in Toronto this last summer, too.

why are people afraid of thunder and lightning? do they think the gods are angry at them?

Because electrical storms are very rare in California and people don't know what the fuck.

    It's not that uncommon
Yeah, seriously. I see them off the coast at least once a year.

    hooray!

Be safe. You guys in the Torrance/Long Beach area are definitely in a bad spot right now.

Driving up from the South Bay area of San Diego to Glendale tonight. Should I even bother trying the 5 or go a bit more inland and do the 15?

Mann... same here (well, same destination city, but not departing from SD). I'm really hoping for decent/safe driving conditions tonight. Sigalert doesn't show any bad accidents for now at least.

It hailed yesterday, and today we had 50 mph wind and lots of rain. I was inside most of the day and when I left to go to work the rain had stopped. It's calming down and the rest of the week is just normal rain.

Really all we ever get are flood warnings.

It may never get that far, but if any of you sarcastic sons of bitches need a place to stay, pm me. You'll be among the many intelligent southern CAians who are here atm.

Just pm me, since everybody I know down there is evacuating and either here or on their way...

I really hope everybody is okay. However, after the Haiti donations and the red alerts coming up on our whether radios, we're (as Pacific North Westerners) prepared for a mass flooding of people from the south if all of the whether forecasts come to fruition.

Seriously, though, I'm just hoping/praying all of the CA parforumersts are okay.

The "I can't get anywhere outside of rush hour" folk that we know are ditching up to our place, but they're also very midwestern bred and don't want to deal with the SW folk freaking out about unusual whether.

they may be freaks, but CNN is pretending like southern CA has never seen a real tornado, and they are preparing for full weather bullshit.

PS: We are full of food for anybody who comes this way.

Eh, this weather hasn't really been all that intense here in San Diego, though North County might have got some stranger stuff. My place flooded again last night, but worse than before. I've only got one dry patch left to sleep on, if I lose that I'll have to go couch crash. Sadly the storm drain at my street corner simply cannot handle the super heavy rainfall.

Today might even be worse, this next storm is super fast moving and San Diego may experience its lowest barometer reading ever. So basically they're forecasting every crazy weather phenomenon you can think of. Twisters, thunderstorms, and even....graupels. Yeah, look that shit up.

The rain doesn't seem to be so bad today (in fact I think it's stopped.) It was worse driving home yesterday than it was driving to work this morning.

And what's with the Torrance hate from a bunch of pages back? Man city is alright, I mean minus the flooding and the PD.

my families toll from the hail/flooding/wind last night:

first time since i lived in the midwest that i have had to pull over on the side of the road (last night) because of rain so thick that i couldnt see to drive, everyone stopped, it was strange.
a wooden fence separating my parents nieghbors property from ours is down, flattened
palm tree in the front yard is down
as of this morning, there are still hail pellets in the back yard, last night there was one or two ping pong ball size ones, pretty much all the delicate plants are destroyed
at my place there is a tree where my parking spot should be D: its a tiny just planted tree, but still.

is fiz alive? he was on the road last night too at a very bad time

its been 12+ hours, so get ready for mudslides in la jolla and the new developments out east.

God..I can't even count the number of idjits that tried to drive through our flooded st. last night. 2 cars didn't make it and stalled, a guy in a jeep got a little brave and tried it, but he quickly gave up and instead went through people's yards. Look people, if the water is over the curbs and several feet up onto adjacent lawns, you're piece of crap accord is NOT going to make it through.

Also, they're evacuating people because all the fires from the last few years burned off all the vegetation on the mountainsides, so like others have said, mud slides become a huge liability.
