DIPLOMACY
First moves are due Sunday January 24th at noon, EST (GMT -5:00)
A game of lies, tactical maneuvering, territory control, lies, backstabbing, lies, and seething, cosmic hatred.
You control one of seven European powers in the quest to control 18 of the supply center territories on the board. There is no randomness; combat is decided by strength of numbers alone, and ties go to the defender. Since no nation is strong enough to oust another one by itself, to begin with, cooperation, alliances, and betrayal are necessary to make any gains.
The rules are here.
Read the rules and understand them fully, and make sure to use the
jDip software to experiment with unit conflicts to be positive that you understand how things will turn out.
If you have any questions, PM me.
At the pace I plan, this game should take about a month to complete, although we can accelerate the turns if players so desire.
HOW IT WILL WORK
We will use the
jDip software; I will distribute turn files and post images at the beginning of each turn.
We will be using the Fleet in Rome variant, which simply gives Italy a fleet instead of an army in Rome, giving their weak position a bit more versatility. Unless anyone has strong objections.
Countries will be distributed randomly amongst the players who sign up.
The starting year is 1901, and each year consists of a Spring turn, a Fall turn, and then a build turn. Movement takes place in the Spring Turn and Fall turns, but you may only have as many units as you have supply centres at the end of a Fall turn. That means you can only really conquer territory by controlling it at the end of a Fall turn. Keep that in mind.
Each Spring and Fall will have a time limit of two days, and each build turn will have a time limit of one day.
Orders will be due at midnight of the day in question, Eastern Time (-05:00).
Later orders will not be accepted. Units that do not receive orders will simply hold, which is usually bad news.
You may submit orders as many times as you want up until the deadline, at which point I will take the most recent orders and use them, ignoring all previous orders. This is to account for the frantic PMing in which you shall engage.
SUBMITTING ORDERS
All orders are to be submitted to me, Evil Multifarious, by PM.
Subject line: Country - Forum name - Season - Year
Please, please follow this format to make my life easier. I will accept orders that do not follow this subject line, but I won't like it, and I will become more amenable to bribes from your enemies. I accept Paypal and all major credit cards.
The format for orders will be the abbreviated format as seen in jDip, or the full sentence form if you so desire.
For example:
Army Munich moves to Burgundy, or A Mun -> Bur
Army Ruhr supports Army Munich moving to Burgundy, or A Ruh S A Mun -> BurPLAYERS AND SIGN UPS
The first seven players to sign up will be accepted.
The next two to five will be replacements if necessary.
Any player who fails to submit orders for two deadlines in a row will be replaced, their nation's reins taken up by more suitable men of action.

Posts
I would normally be right into this, but currently I'm trying to resist getting pulled into more timesinks (he says as trawling internet forums).
Edit: Just noticed that playing a variant is a 'premium' option there, so ignore me.

I'm like Earth.
Mostly harmless.
Up to you.
the image is just for the fun of it; most play will be done by sending out jDip turn files, which players would open in their jDip folder
if you can install jDip at work and fiddle with moves there, then you should have no problem playing.

Inquisitor - Russia

This is to give everyone a bit of extra time to read up on rules and strategy, since we have some new players.
Please do your diplomacy by PM to keep your plans and doings secret, unless you want to make some kind of public statement.
When you have decided on your orders, PM them to me.
On Sunday, I will send the updated turn files to show the results of the first turn.
In addition, I refer our new players to a few Diplomacy strategy articles, especially opening strategy.
The President has issued a communique : The Republic has sent diplomatic envoys to all major countries, assuring them of France's desire for peaceful co-habitation.
"Let us put the past behind us and look to a future of peace and prosperity for all ! Also : Unicorns ! "
The President reminds you all that unicorns are a protected species and that any mistreatment of such splendid creatures shall be met with overwhelming violence.

i am lenient with deadlines and i also just got back into town, so fair is fair
but the update will occur at some point either late tonight or early tomorrow
An aggressive first turn. The orders themselves:
The final result:
Turkey and Russia clash for the Black Sea, always a contentious spot. Russia also clashes with Austria for a similarly dangerous spot. It looks like the Ruskies are frothing. THEY FROTH.
The well-dressed and economically enviable Scandinavians are nervous, as well, as the fleets of the great powers converge on them. It appears that everyone wants furniture that comes with instruction booklets.
Here is the turn file.
Fall 1901 orders are due on Tuesday at midnight, EST.
Tuesday, 11:59 pm. There.
