Need help finding title for a vintage Anime movie.

Ok, I got this idea, actually, from someone else who used these forums to find an old movie title. So I figured I would give it a try as well!
I havent seen this movie since I was a child... so we are talking 80's movie... here is what I remember, and I do apologize for the vagueness!
I dont remember too much, other than that the foundation of the story was.. there was this bad guy who was using a weapon(or an army with weapons) that turned people into blocky-like autonomatons... and as the story progressed, he would use these blocky-like autonomatons to build himself a castle with. I remember there being an animal-ish creature that was a "sidekick" and could talk to one of the main characters.. i remember at one point.. the animal creature got shot in the tail, and the fuzzball on the end of his tail got turned into a square block... he cried out.. and was shot again and turned into the blocky-like autonomaton.
So anyways.. very vague.. i know. I would like to know what this was, if anyone out there could help me, I would be greatly appreciative. Thank you in advance for those who know what this is or know where to look.
