wikipedia wrote:
The Darkness is an upcoming video game for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 consoles (AND PC, cmon we all know it) based on the comic book of the same name. (By Starbreeze Studios - makers of the very excellent Chronicle of Riddick - Escape From Butcher Bay game for Xbox/PC)

On the eve of his 21st birthday, the player takes control of Mafia hitman Jackie Estacado who is suddenly possessed by the malevolent powers of The Darkness. Although this supernatural entity allows him to wreak havoc on his enemies, the Darkness also has a powerful will of its own and Estacado must now learn how to control it. The gameplay uniquely blends both modern crime drama and supernatural horror through both first-person and third-person perspectives. The environments are highly destructible allowing players to explode the scenery of the New York underworld to wreak vengeance on his former Mafia employers and eventually defeat the terrifying creatures of The Otherworld, a parallel reality where the Darkness dwells.

It looks cool, but going by the name and the inclusion of horror, my first reaction was "oh man, another gorgeous game that I have to play with all the lights turned off, score."

    Wonder how multiplayer will be.

The title reminds me more of the current achewood plot line than genuinely scary things (I mean, come on, "The Darkness"? You might as well call it "Bad Things Up in Hur") Regardless, Riddick was awesome, despite Riddick being a ridiculous name, so here's hoping for a another good one.

Im looking forward to this game because Im a big fan of the comics. Sad to see the comics look exchanged for this one but its cool none the less.

Multiplayer seems to be a little toned down. I dont think you get much of the single player powers in it from what I've read. You can choose between mob members who can use guns, take hits etc. etc. but the unique twist is that they shapeshift into the darklings (the little thing hushing the woman) which can scurry along walls and move faster but die very easily and all that good stuff. You can change on the fly.

Yeah Riddick was like number one "game you thought would suck but ended up being awesome" ever.

I may even so so far as to say that those screens make "The Pleasantly Sufficient Lighting" a more apt title.

Oh, I agree..it's just so much fun to make fun. Also, this tidbit pretty much sells the game for me
Later parts of the level offer similar levels of flexibility. Taking out lights and knocking doors off their hinges, or shimmying through the ventilation and entering a sealed room for a couple of stealthy kills means that you can approach each of the goals with a truly unique mindset.

The introduction of Darklings, summonable minions who will do your deadly bidding, spice up the gameplay even further. By completing certain objectives or sub-missions, you'll be awarded use of these critters, who come packing some offbeat weaponry. Ever seen a man take a jackhammer to the chest? Or how about a long-toothed saw to the neck? It's gory and good.

...Or it would if I had the hardware to run it.

Game looks sweet. This has been at the very periphery of games I'm watching, as there's been extremely minimal information beyond a few pages in EGM recently. The otherworld sounds like it could make or break a large portion of the experience.

Seems like they're going to keep the darklings intact, which is good. I love those goddamn things in the comics. I might have to hunt down my Darkness collection. I had most of the first run.

Far be it from me to act like a graphics whore but does this game just look really shoddy to anyone else, graphics-wise?

I don't mean "100 shades of brown lol" either. In that second screenshot the human looks completely weird and the glistening skin on the monster on the left looks awful.

Actual plotline sounds like it holds some potential though getting the right balance of survival-horror and traditional FPS would result in a game I'd love.

I've been looking forward to this game already, but I did not know that Mike Patton was doing the voicework - that's pretty damned cool if not a pretty unusual choice.

There's a gameplay trailer at xboxyde, it's lengthy but keep in mind this was an E3 version trailer so graphically it isn't quite the same.

I'm just hoping that they have Gustaf Grefberg doing the soundtrack for this game as well. His work on Enclave & Knights of the Temple was amazing!

TDK (the publisher of KOTT) posted the complete soundtrack for KOTT on their website for free download, but sadly the site seems to be down now. Fear not though, 'cause I upped a copy right here if you'd like to check out just how good the guy is :)

I hope there are hookers everywhere tempting you and if you accept- BAM! You lose your demon powers, drop dead and get a screen of a zombie rottwieler chowing down on your face with a bloody font spelling, "YOU HAVE AIDS!" Just like in the comics.

Seriously those are some shit screenies there, get the one with the tentacle stabbing through a torso or a gun inside a guys mouth, that's the real deal. It seems its going to be a supernatural type of Max Paynelike FPS, which is awesome. You better be getting Hitman style jobs for a few missions away from the main plot, where you get to assassinate some well protected targets, I don't want to hang out in grungy sewers and alleys the whole game, a la every other recent sci fi shooter.

when the thread drops off the first page in the early morning for most people and thus the majority of forumers dont get to see it, sometimes yeah.

bumping it like that after days or something would be unreasonable. I could have said something else to "hide" it - but what's to hide? just getting the topic a reasonable amount of exposure before letting it die naturally.

id like it if people did that for topics i was interested in, but missed because i slept during the brief time it was on the front page

Crotch-tentacle in the vids is unintentionally hilarious - not in a totally good way - and the whole TV thing seems a bit pointless. Yes, yes, it's wonderful technology and I'm sure you can cram a Blu-Ray disc full of fifty different ancient Masterpiece Theatre presentations of Fall Of The House Of Usher or some such thing. But why on earth would anyone want to stop and spend ninety minutes watching a film while they were in the middle of playing a videogame? If you actually suddenly feel the urge to do so in the middle of play, why not just stick in a DVD instead of standing in the middle of an in-game level watching a virtual TV? (Cue PA Sims comic in 3... 2... 1...) It's interesting technology and it could be great in an MMO or something, but a single-player FPS? Why?

Anyway, those two things aside I'm quite looking forward to this - said it before, say it again, Riddick was amazing not only because it was an excellent use of a then-mediocre license but also because Starbreeze hadn't given any indication they were capable of anything so good. Enclave and Knights of the Temple were 90-proof distilled shit on a disc. If they can keep up this new, surprising form and do justice to what was originally a pretty good pulp comic book (before the art went to shit, at least) I'll be very happy. The preview video looked like it needed a fair bit of work, but it was still fantastic.

I figured it was probably from a while back. Didn't seem to have any real AI or much animation going, but it looked pretty good, some of the effects were gorgeous and it did lay out the gameplay fairly well.

It's just it featured the hero picking up a police car and flinging it around with his giant demon wang. :P

I saw an early vid of this (any vid is early at this point, but I digress) and it really didn't look all that special to me. The enemies were retarded and I just didn't "get" what was happening.

But these are the guys who made Riddick, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

And if this is the same video I'm thinking of, it was specifically labelled "Not for public viewing, do not release" or something, so it's not as if they were trying to show off anything in particular. I didn't understand what he was supposed to be doing either, I figured it was one of the devs messing around and running through the features at random.
