Bricked iPod touch. Can't restore

Windows will absolutely not recognize this thing. Been using it fine for over a year, no jailbreaking or anything.

Got home yesterday and plugged it in, not recognized, won't charge, even on a wall charger. Reset the device, reinstalled itunes. No iPod drivers show up anywhere in Windows (Vista pro). Tried recovery mode, iTunes doesn't see anything. Tried DFU mode, still nothing.

Out of warranty and I really don't feel like shelling out cash for tech support. Anybody have any other ideas?

sorry to ask the obvious tech support douche question but have you tried it on a different computer/OS?

Yep, tried it on another PC and my roommate's mac. No luck either way.

If you got an apple store nearby see if they can bring it back to life.

Hey I'm iphone tech support and it's pretty much the same device so few quick things

    1) Are you plugging it into the back of the computer (usb)?

    2) When you uninstalled itunes, did you uninstall all the major components or itunes itself. When uninstalling itunes, you have to uninstall Apple Mobile Device and Apple Software Update first, then Quicktime, then iTunes itself, and Bonjour Service as well if that appears. Once uninstalled, restart the computer, download fresh version from itunes.com, and reinstall.

Once it's reinstalled I'd try putting it into recovery mode again. When you did this previous, you had the iphone disconnected from the cable, and then held down the home button before, during, and after connecting it correct?

    1) Yes

    2) I did not. Will try this when I get home.

    3) Yep, the device did everything I would expect it to for recovery mode, got to the "Connect to iTunes" screen, but iTunes didn't see anything.

Will try reinstalling with the above procedure later. Thanks for the help.

Is there perhaps some crud in the connector on the iPod? Or maybe a pin that got knocked sideways or something?

Blew it out with compressed air. I can't see well enough to tell if anything's bent, but there's no difficult in connecting the cord.

Yeah, I would definitely try the above uninstalling method, because if it is an issue with the ipod drivers (which it could be, as your ipod responds to being put into recovery mode), then that would resolve it.

Sometimes if my ipod has been completely drained and it hasn't been charged in a while, it can take a while for it to start charging and be detected. Usually if I leave it connected for a while it starts working.

Not sure but this could be the same problem you're having.

Tried reinstalling again with no luck.

Broke down and took it to the Apple store. Guy said it looked like there was corrosion on the pins on the dock port, but the water damage sensor hadn't been tripped. Replaced it at no cost, even though it was out of warranty. Kudos to Apple.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.

Nice. Apple can really be a good company sometimes. They replaced my iPod Touch because the headphone jack was fucked, out of warranty and at no cost as well.

Ooh, I need to try this. iTunes has been acting funny on my PC for a while now. It frequently doesn't exit the program when I close it, resulting in the PC shutdown sequence getting interrupted and what not and it hasn't been able to do firmware updates to my iPhone for the past few releases, had to do them on our mac laptop and then restore the backup from the PC afterwards.
