Singer was told by prison officials that he could not keep the materials because Dungeons & Dragons "promotes fantasy role playing, competitive hostility, violence, addictive escape behaviors, and possible gambling," according to the ruling. The prison later developed a more comprehensive policy against all types of fantasy games, the court said.
Oh. It wasn't promoting "fantasies of escape", but "escape behaviors". And not just any escape behaviors. Addictive escape behaviors.

Prison officials instigated the Dungeons & Dragons ban among concerns that playing the game promoted gang-related activity and was a threat to security. Singer challenged the ban but the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday upheld it as a reasonable policy.

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures, often working together as a group, with the help of complicated rules.

Singer, 33, has been a devoted player of the fantasy role-playing game since he was a child, according to the court ruling. After the ban went into effect, prison officials confiscated dozens of Dungeons & Dragons books and magazines in his cell as well as a 96-page manuscript he had written detailing a potential scenario for the game that players could act out.

Prison officials enacted the ban in 2004 after an inmate sent an anonymous letter expressing concern about Singer and three other inmates forming a "gang" focused around playing the game.

    what the

they're worried that inmates will form GANGS over D&D

as opposed to the gangs formed over race, status, wealth, type of conviction, community standing, etc

they're worried about D&D causing GANG ACTIVITY

    what the what the what

i mean granted prisons are supposed to restrict your behavior but are they going to ban books as well?

I'm pretty sure all the arguments against this can be made for books

They probably could if they wanted to.

And it wasn't them worried so much as "anonymous inmate" who sent the tip was. And it's possible that inmate was probably just trying to get back at D&D guy over something else.

    yeah but that's the issue

preventing D&D play in a prison is STUPID

there's no reason to do it other than a misunderstanding of D&D and a pure vindictiveness

that's not good policy at all!

It wasn't until I read this news story that it occurred to me exactly how I would spend my time in prison, if I ended up there in another life or something.

Assuming they wouldn't take it away from my prison as well!

    Dis-interest I suppose?

I liked the first movie (after hating the first book)

Disliked the second movie (After liking the second book)

And I don't know, just never saw the third. I mean if it follows the pattern it means I'll like it, but eh, I don't feel a great desire to watch it you know?

I haven't even read the third book, aside from picking it up at the bookstore and skipping ahead to the ring-in-Mount-Doom scene.

As far as the article goes, I'm completely fine with it. But they should have just gone along with this route:
The appeals court said the prison's policy was reasonable and did not violate Singer's rights.

"After all, punishment is a fundamental aspect of imprisonment, and prisons may choose to punish inmates by preventing them from participating in some of their favorite recreations," the court said.

Instead of giving a whole convoluted reasoning about why D&D should be banned. "Because we said so." would suffice. Yeah, it's mean to him, but guys who bludgeon other guys to death with sledgehammers know something already about being mean.

    This raises an interesting point.

What are you allowed to do in prison aside the joke answers of raping, breaking out via a serious of tattoos and stabbing?

Now days I know they have the internet. And you're allowed to do weights and to read and do equivalent community college courses. What else do you do?
