Malif-whowhatsit?
Malifaux is Wyrd-Games’ entry into skirmish tabletop gaming:
Based in an alternate Earth, Malifaux uses gothic, steampunk, victorian horror with a dose of the wild west to inject fun and depth into the magical lawlessness of a world rife with monsters, necropunks, manmachine hybrids, gunslingers, and power-hungry politicos. Actively using character-driven stories to define the world of Malifaux, seek your fortune in this fast paced and brutal 32mm tabletop miniature skirmish game. Assemble your crew and stake your claim!
No longer do you have to trust the fickle fate of a dice roll, in Malifaux you use cards, a Fate Deck, as you lead your Crew to victory with strategy, tactics and resource management, and if that isn't enough, you can Cheat Fate. Looking for scalability? Malifaux has it. Jump directly into a Scrap with 4 - 6 miniatures, ensuring a quick and brutal fight with each character having unique skills and abilities. Want to escalate it? Take it to a Brawl, bring in additional members of your faction or hire out mercenaries to do your dirty work.
What, no dice?
Correct! Malifaux uses a system that replaces die rolls with flips off of a deck of cards. This “Fate Deck” is a normal deck of 54 (52+Jokers) playing cards. No CCG worries here!
Svenn has a nice writeup of the game’s basic mechanics and flow here:
http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-review/The Players and The Prize
Soulstone – Not a faction, this is the prize. This strange ore is native to Malifaux. Everyone wants it due to the fact that it makes magic and arcane constructs possible.
The Guild – This is the Law ‘round these parts. The Guild controls most of the Soulstones shipping out of Malifaux through the dimensional rift back to Earth. Consisting of the classic Victorian/old west gunslingers, hangin’ judges and magic, these Lawmen do not take kindly to anyone. Oh yeah, and this hot piece known as Lady Justice:
The Resurrectionists – So, I heard you like Necromancy? These guys are for you. Depending on what Master you build your Crew around, you could have hordes of shambling zombies, a fresh-golem constructing mad scientist, or a slightly mad individual who raises “ladies of the night” for exactly what you’d think :winky:
:winky:
The Arcanists – Masters of the Arcane Sciences brought about by the discovery of Soulstone, The Arcanists deal a heavy dose of magic and steampunk to anyone looking to interfere with the collection of the precious ore. Just look at this:
The Neverborn – Native inhabitants of Malifaux, these…things are manifistations of the fears and dread of the human invaders. Pandora can actually kill you with fear. Oh, there are hot demons too:
The Outcasts – Mercenaries, Outsiders, and those that live outside of Guild Law. These are a faction unto themselves, as well as being available to the other Crews, for a price…

Do not fear, casual reader, the cards we are refering to are regular playing cards +2 jokers.
Nice review, btw.
Of course, I purchased them anyway because they are dirt cheap, they've got pretty pictures, and having the numbers on them (instead of J, Q, K, A) and the damage rating just makes things easier.
Svenn, mind if I pop my OP cherry and PM you something to pretty up this thread to get the kids in here?
Go for it!
Amigu, they are definitely cheap compared to some other models. Combine that with the fact that it's a skirmish game so you don't need a ton of models, and it's a fairly cheap game to play. Well worth checking out.
The short version:
Mankind opened a dimensional rift to another place. This place was rich with an ore known as Soulstone. This ore became very valuable, as it provided arcane power. The Guild and The Arcanists are out to amass as much Soulstone as possible to gain more political and eldrich strength. The Resurrectionists are after it to hone the ancient, evil art of Necromancy. The Neverborn, the native inhabitants of Malifaux, are out for their own end, which, at this point, seems to be destroying all of humanity.
The stories in the rulebook flesh this out quite a bit, but that's the tl;dr version :P
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!

I've got a downloads page up that has a full rules reference sheet, but you'll need all the individual character stats to play the game.

The card system's a cool idea but it makes me nerd rage way too easily.
Downside: Balance is hysterically bad. Some of the smaller figures are cast in very odd ways. Have similar problems with the old GW pink horrors. Tiny little arms going into tiny little sockets without enough metal to really pin anything.
Also, Austin's Dragon's Lair has an ongoing Malifaux league.
So there are some balance issues, and this game hasn't caught on around where I live. But for around $40 a box, are the models, gameplay, and re-playability worth it? It is pretty cheap for the models alone.
I still think I'm going to order a box of models just to do them up, I'm kinda torn between Colette, Rasputina or Kirai (though I'm hesitant on Kirai, it's a little too anime-weeaboo despite nice looking models haha)
Kind of like playing Type-less Magic, really.
Well, there's a ton of errata here: http://wyrd-games.net/rules
And additional errata here: http://wyrd-games.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10309
And a large FAQ explaining rules issues here: http://wyrd-games.net/faq
They've been pretty good about quickly answering rules questions on the forums for the most part, though I'll admit they've been a little slow since Book 2 came out.
Also, there are a ton of resources and links to all the errata, faqs, etc here: http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-downloads/
The bigger size makes me a little sad, but all the minis look really really solid. Hopefully there are peeps in the Texas Metroplex that play.
Also, as a funeral director, I more than approve of the awesome Nicodem dude.

Actually, the 32mm minis are about the same size as all the 28mm "Heroic" minis you'll find in WHFB/40k or other 28mm games. Put them side by side and I bet you can't tell the difference in most cases. I was worried about it at first, but after receiving my minis and sticking them side by side with my 28mm minis they look fine together.
I was just thinking to myself how some of the minis for this game would be great to use in a Deadlands campaign.
Now if they'd just release the Molly model...
(Note for the readers - In Malifaux, you build your crew (in secret) after you see what kind of scenerio you will be playing.)
Default Crew
25SS
Candy
Doppleganger
Sorrow x2
Poltergeist
Candy
Doppleganger
Sorrow x6
I've never tried Sorrow spam like this before - normally I just run 3. With Doppleganger mimicing Pandy's Damage aura and the 'geist's tantrum spell, that is alot of Wp duels that opponents will have to make. Each loss will be at 2+Sorrow damage. Question is, should I drop a couple Sorrows at 40 for Teddy or Kade?
Speedy Crew - For Board Covering Scenerios
25SS
Mature Neph
Young Neph x1
Terror Tot x3
Primordial Magic
Doppleganger
Mature Neph
Young Neph x2
Terror Tots x3
Basic Lilith Crew to get across the board - Earthquake, earthquake, earthquake from Lillith, Doppleganger, and the totem. I really wanted to use the Dreamer for my speed crew, but no proxies allowed...
