Birth Control question

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the Implanon implant next Thursday. Any of you hear horrid things about it and want to talk me out of it? It's going to cost me $800, but the Nuva ring would cost me $1440 with the same time frame covered, and that's if the Nuva price doesn't go up again. In the last year its increased from $30 a month to $40 a month.

I was going to get an IUD, but I'm a wimp and have heard painful things about shoving things through one's cervix.

All I heard about it was that it will give you irregular periods. I was so excited when I heard about it to, but sometimes surprise is a bad thing. :(

EDIT: I was talking to my gynecologist about this, so I didn't just hear it from my best friend who heard it from her cousin, etc.

I was told irregular periods for the first 6 months, then light or none. 6 months then 2.5 years in the clear I can live with :)

My girlfriend had the Implanon for 3 years. One of the things that she found out about it is that sometimes it will 'run out' earlier than the 3 year time period. Apparantly there are many factors that can change how long it lasts. So be careful towards the last days of its life.

My fiancee currently uses Implanon and has for the last year and a half. The irregular period is about right - for the first 6 or so months they were off kilter - heavy one month then even heavier the next. After six months she was spotting for about another 6-8 weeks and then... nothing. Absolutely nothing.

There's a minor squick factor in that you can feel the implant under the skin (if that kind of thing bothers you) but apart from that it's been top notch.

Have you ever taken progestin-based birth control pills (like Ortho-Tricyclen or Yazmine)?

    If yes, then cool.
If no, then try the pills first. You don't want to discover that you have a bad reaction to progestin after you get the implant.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

I can't take the pill. I'd have 10 children by now, I can't manage to take my antibiotics for my stupid abscess, or really - I can't remember anything. Not even with an alarm. The alarm goes off, I hit the button ... then I forget why the alarm went off. That is something to think about though, I've been on depo, and Nuva, never any pill based birth control. That is a question to ask. It can be removed but I don't want to blow 800$.
