The Crazies is about the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply. One man, his wife, a nurse, and the sheriff try to survive this plague, but the military is killing everyone on sight. They're going to have to fight their way out, or die by either the plague or the military.
It's not a new idea though. It's based off of a film from the early 70's. And directed by someone quite experianced with the horror genre.
Now I don't mind a remake or two, but it seems more often then not you end up getting something along the lines of the remakes for The Fog or Day Of The Dead. I know there's at least a few good ideas left for scaring people that doesn't include making them watch a piece of retreaded crap. What do you guys think? Was there any great horror movies that deserve to be left alone (or any period) or do we need these remakes to keep the scare 'fresh'?
I vote for more horror movies and less gore movies pitched as 'horror' movies
Chances of that happening: 1%
I can back that sentiment. It seems like directors nowadays can't do a horror movie without resorting to some sort of extreme dismemberment or decapitation. Some movies can make it work but others just smell of laziness on the director/writers' part, trying to score a cheap scare.
i have a friend who just watched the fly for the first time ever
i refuse to watch it ever again because it creeps me out more than any movie in history, but she kept texting me at all the gross parts and it grossed me out by proxy

Holy shit, since when trailers are so damn long? Might as well just give us the entire movie.

A lot of trailers lately have been annoying me because instead of giving you a general idea of the film they seem to give away most of what happens and a lot of it would actually be pretty good surprises. I guess they feel like they have to show the cool parts to get people to watch them or something.
I understand why my mom doesn't watch trailers now.

yeah I don't watch trailers of movies I know I'm going to see
I haven't seen anything from Iron Man 2 for example.
Is it wrong that the 70's version of the crazies looks way more entertaining than the new one? I might have to track down a copy now.
Also Ju-on, the original japanese version of the grudge (Which I heard kinda sucked) scared the fucking shit out of me. I don't even know why, something about it was just really unsettling.

the scariest movie I've ever seen is Blair Witch Project
followed by the first three quarters of Poltergeist
I thought Blair Witch was very effective!
Lot of people like to rag on it now but I liked it a lot; I only saw it for the first time about 2 years ago
it is so so effective.
it's that different kind of terrifying, the unknown "what the fuck is going on" kind.
I mean it was a perfect storm when I watched it for the first time. I was home by myself at night and I watched one of the mockumentaries that pretend it's all real on the DVD special fetures before I watched the movie
I was frozen to the couch, sweating and clenching teeth in fear
the previews and stuff for ju-on really creeped me the fuck out until someone walked by and heard that gurgling sound and was like 'man it sounds like someone playing with a bendy straw'
immediately the whole thing became comical
never did see the movie though, maybe it would scare me?

I was at my friend's house. Just the two of us. In the middle of nowhere. Near a forest.

I remember the mockumentary that aired on the Sci-Fi Channel when the movie came out
Anyway, that final sequence of the movie, in the house, had me so on edge it wasn't even funny
The running and the screaming and aaaah

Forever and ever. I thought it was genuinely terrifying.

It gave me nightmares for a week.

I too am easily effected by Naomi Watts
It was awesome but there is no way it was genuinely terrifying

Amen. That fucking gurgling noise, and the crunching. I can't even watch the trailer with the sound on.
Also, I enjoy every Alien movie, even the bad one. Those chestbusters would hurt like nobodies business.
Depends on your mindset at the time of watchin'.

Yeah, the Blair Witch Project is basically evil.
I can't watch it alone.
could not get through the final scene.

my friend was just like 'hey watch this movie, trust me its good'
and then i was all fuuuuuck
I thought it was awesome scary, though the end probably wasn't as good as the first 3/4.
