[Horror Movies] Gotta Be Nuts To See The Crazies?

A new year means new horror movies. Kinda. The end of the month has this coming out.

Wikipedia wrote:
The Crazies is about the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply. One man, his wife, a nurse, and the sheriff try to survive this plague, but the military is killing everyone on sight. They're going to have to fight their way out, or die by either the plague or the military.

It's not a new idea though. It's based off of a film from the early 70's. And directed by someone quite experianced with the horror genre.

Though maybe not as experienced then...

It's not the only horror remake this year either.

Now I don't mind a remake or two, but it seems more often then not you end up getting something along the lines of the remakes for The Fog or Day Of The Dead. I know there's at least a few good ideas left for scaring people that doesn't include making them watch a piece of retreaded crap. What do you guys think? Was there any great horror movies that deserve to be left alone (or any period) or do we need these remakes to keep the scare 'fresh'?

I vote for more horror movies and less gore movies pitched as 'horror' movies

    Chances of that happening: 1%

i enjoy a movie that can do gore and a sense of foreboding and doom really well

so most horror movies are really disappointin for me

i enjoyed The Thing and the uncut version of wolf creek

on the latter, i may be in the minority

I can back that sentiment. It seems like directors nowadays can't do a horror movie without resorting to some sort of extreme dismemberment or decapitation. Some movies can make it work but others just smell of laziness on the director/writers' part, trying to score a cheap scare.

A lot of trailers lately have been annoying me because instead of giving you a general idea of the film they seem to give away most of what happens and a lot of it would actually be pretty good surprises. I guess they feel like they have to show the cool parts to get people to watch them or something.

I understand why my mom doesn't watch trailers now.

Is it wrong that the 70's version of the crazies looks way more entertaining than the new one? I might have to track down a copy now.

Also Ju-on, the original japanese version of the grudge (Which I heard kinda sucked) scared the fucking shit out of me. I don't even know why, something about it was just really unsettling.

    it is so so effective.

it's that different kind of terrifying, the unknown "what the fuck is going on" kind.

I mean it was a perfect storm when I watched it for the first time. I was home by myself at night and I watched one of the mockumentaries that pretend it's all real on the DVD special fetures before I watched the movie

I was frozen to the couch, sweating and clenching teeth in fear
