Lost Wallet on Metro North Train

Ayep. Fell asleep on the train home this evening, left wallet on chair. I've already reported the credit/ATM cards I had as stolen, as well as filed a claim with the MTA office online (doubt that'll come to anything).

Not too hurt over losing some cash, more worried about the potential identity theft as I had my social security card in the wallet. Yes I know it's retarded to carry that on one's person, but as my luck would have it - I needed it today as I've started a new job and they had to get a copy. Go figure.

Is there anything else that can be done here to protect myself?

My guess would be to go visit a government agency to tell them that you lost your Social Securty card. That would be the first thing I'd do.

Go to the lost and found at grand central. There's a decent chance a commuter turned it in if you lost it on a peak train. (Same shit happened to me years ago on the LIRR and I was outright fucking amazed it got turned in.)

    Get a police report.

Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!

You can file reports for things that are not crimes?

I've lost my wallet three times over the years on my local public transportation, and every time it's been turned into the office's lost and found.

People are surprisingly less dickish than you might assume.

If you are unable to locate the wallet you definitely should look into contacting the three credit bureaus to get fraud alerts on your credit reports. Having your SSN card and I assume your Driver's license will be pretty much all somebody would need to get some credit cards in your name.

You can tell the credit reporting agencies to put your account on high alert, I think you only need to tell one and they'll tell the others, then it will be more difficult to steal your identity.

    Good advice on everyone's part.

I spoke to another friend of mine who has lost some things on the trains, only to have them returned a week or so later and he confirms that they're fairly good in returning lost items. I'll keep my fingers crossed but I don't really have much hope to see the wallet again.

I'll keep an eye on my credit report and see about putting it into high alert for now. The biggest annoyance is that now I have no currency at all for a few days. Makes getting around quite the bitch.

I suppose this can get locked now, thanks all.
