Road Trip - What to do

I'm planning on a personal road trip from Houston, TX, to Narragansett, RI for my friend's wedding in July. I'm not big on commercial flying, and even if I was, my friend's wedding is . . . tentative, so I don't want to make any irreversible decisions or nonrefundable purchases, and the cost for a refundable ticket is about the same as total round-trip costs for driving. My last big road trip was to E3 in LA about 7 years ago, and my last even psuedo-vacation was to GDC in San Francisco, CA, almost two years ago, so I'm definitely due for this. Anyhow, I don't know much about the area I'm driving through, so I'm looking for stops and sights along the way that you would personally recommend, anything scenic, entertaining, active, or interesting and informative. I don't mind if it's a bit out of the way, as I'm looking to make the most out of this. I linked a Google map so you have the general path I'm headed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just a quick driving recommendation depending on whether or not you want to stop in NYC. If you do NOT want to stop in NYC, cut north on the garden state parkway and cross the Tappan Zee bridge on 287 instead. In my experience (I drive from Boston to DC and back every now and then), it's got far less traffic.
