Win7 - oem edition- restoring from hdd image

MadpandaMadpanda suburbs west of chicagoRegistered User regular
I currently have Windows 7 Oem installed on a harddrive. This harddrive (the newest on my system of course) is clicking and throwing errors every few minutes (monitoring via active s.m.a.r.t) so I want to replace it.

I want to create an image of the partition and then restore it to a new drive, which will be a different brand. Will this require re-activation and if so how much of a pain is it usually to do this?

Googling around hasn't really given me a clear answer.

It's an image so it shouldn't, it's not like you're going to sysprep the install or anything it's strictly a direct backup image.

How are you creating the image? I just started a thread asking how one would do that for free or cheap as I am interested in creating an image backup of some PC's.

I was trying to answer that very question as the last time I had to do an image restore was years ago when I still had a copy of ghost. It appears Win7 has the system image backup/restore capability built in. I thought there was an Opensource project that could do this also but I might have been thinking about partition resizing.

You likely won't be able to get a full working image if there are physical problems with the drive. It won't ask for a new license - you need to change more than one component. The only exception would be the motherboard as it tends to count as multiple components (chipset, sound, sata, ide, etc...). If Win 7 is anything like Vista, the license resets every 90 or 120 days anyway.

At the worst, it'll ask you to re-activate when you get it online. Not a big hassle at all. No Phone Calls necessary. With Windows 7, you can pretty much change anything but the Motherboard and not have to jump through hoops. It's funny, we just went over the Windows 7 OEM license on Friday here at work.
