Since you've got a Go, you're only going to be able to buy games from the PlayStation Store. There is a PlayStation Store thread that can give you answers to any questions you might have.
I don't personally like being limited to PSN games, so I would not have bought a Go (especially considering I've got a bunch of UMDs), but if this is your first PSP, it isn't a mistake per se.
If you like RPGs there are a bunch of PS1 Classics. Final Fantasy VII and VIII (as well as Final Fantasy Tactics if you like SRPGs), Wild Arms I and II, and Suikoden. As for PSP games, there are quite a few as well. While browsing the store, you can select "View by genre" and select RPGs to get a list.
Protip - MediaGo is generally fucking worthless, but using it to download a game while your PSP is connected via USB is usually quicker than downloading it directly to the PSP over wifi.
edit: I forgot to mention, you can download games directly to your PSP from your computer without using MediaGo. Just login to your PSN account from the website and select Download List. You can select the game you want to download and it will start the PlayStation Network Downloader without starting up MediaGo.
so many PSP games need to be put up on the PSN store. where the hell are valkyrie profile and ace combat x? generally when you release a new model for a handheld, you don't want a smaller library than the older version
Im bitter because I own a go and don't have either of those games. but monster hunter FU and castlevania x will have to do
Anyway, got it for 125$. No games. I was looking through and didn't see any first off that I liked. Phantasy star portable isn't even an option.
What are some good ones if I like RPGs?
I have a PSP Go and love RPGs so I'd say you didn't make a mistake. Really, the only big problem is the lack of most of Square-Enix's catalog which hopefully will be fixed soon.
Half-Minute Hero just had a price drop yesterday ($20) and was one of my favorite games of 2009. It's a fantastic parody of the RPG genre.
Pretty much the entire Atlus, NIS America, and XSeed Games catalogs are available on the PSN so there's plenty of good RPGs in there. Some personal favorites are Persona, Wild Arms XF, Disgaea, and Brave Story. Crimson Gem Saga's not bad (although it gets unbalanced towards the end) & I've heard great things about Jeanne D'Arc. Though not actually RPGs, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman & Prinny are both fun games that RPG fans wou
For PSOne Classics, you have Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics (original PS1 version, not the PSP remake), Suikoden, and Wild Arms 1-2.
For Action games with heavy RPG elements, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is supposed to be awesome if you can handle the difficulty & learning curve, and I've heard good things about the Armored Core games. Final Fantasy: Dissidia also seems fun (I've only played the demo) and has a heavy amount of RPG elements for a fighting game. Oh and if you like tower defense games (many RPG fans do), there are several to chose from - the best probably being Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe.
For upcoming stuff, Persona 3 Portable & Hexyz Force both look good and are both coming in both UMD & PSN versions.
If you like tactical rpgs I believe jean de arc is downloadable on the go.
hows the wild arms SRPG? reviews are rather mixed
It's really good. If you actually look at the negative reviews, most of the complaints are that it actually requires strategy and you can't just powerlevel through everything.
The divisive thing about Wild Arms XF is that there's a lot of class changing. You should look at the map & your goal and decide your classes based on that rather than just pick one class and stick with it. Personally, I think it's awesome - there are a gazillion classes and not just your standard Knight, Thief, Mage stuff either (lots of weird ones); the graphics & music are both excellent; and the story's not bad either. And at a mere $15, it's also one of the best deals on the PSN.
Joan of arc is good but kind of silly. If you can get over breaking the siege at orleans with five people against an army of pig men then you will probably be okay. If you are looking for something historical, go elsewhere.
I haven't gotten too far, but the main mechanic is similar to that sony game legend of dragoon. Basically, during battles you can power up into a stronger form and do rad shit before turning back into your meager, loser self.
Another psp strategy game I played was yggdra union. I honestly hated it. The story was filled with so many cliches I started to think it was fucking with me. Also, battles look awesome but you have very little control, so whenever I won I wasn't sure if it was because I was doing something correctly or if I was just doing a good job at exploiting the rock/paper/scissors system.
$125 for an MP3/video player isn't too bad, though.
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. If it even gets to $150 or $170 (Like the current PSP) I might grab one as a dedicated Video player with the occasional game, considering my iPod Touch is 32GB of music, and I wouldn't be able to decide what to remove to put video onto the thing.
I really wish Sony would step up support for the PSP in general, I'm talking beyond games and getting their stuff in the PSN store. Better support for a wide range of video codecs, firmware updates that vastly improve the web browser which is just beyond terrible, a better audio player, open their minis store up to general apps as well, or provide a dedicated app store separate from minis. The RSS app doesn't work for text, which would be nice considerable how horrible the web browser is.
I carry my iPod Touch with me at all times, yet if I had a Go (or my current 2000 PSP) that had alot of the capabilities, I would much prefer it, having actual good games compared to the crap on the iPod would be amazing. I ust don't know what Sony was thinking with the Go, when they didn't bother to update some of the other glaring issues.
I basically bought mine just to play the Sony Classics on the go.
So far I have Resident Evil 2, Silent Hill and Final Fantasy VIII. It was a good investment in my opinion, as I rarely just sit down and play games anymore.
I'm digging my Go so far - I procured it (from Best Buy) for $190 just yesterday.
It hasn't really had much of an opportunity to disappoint me so far, but I'm enjoying Chains of Olympus and looking forward to Patapon and MGS: Portable Ops.
Also, Persona 3 PSP is getting a localization, so that's a nice plus. As well as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and oh em effin gee VALKYRIA CHRONICLES 2!!!

Gift Card, Reward Zone Certificates, or is there some other sale I don't know of?
No, you didn't make a mistake...if. I'm happy with my Go, but I knew exactly what I was getting when I bought it and decided they were sacrifices I was willing to make. The PSP for me is a fourth-line gaming system (behind the DS, Wii, and PS3), and there weren't _that_ many games for it that I was definitely wanting to play (although there were some that I really did want badly). In addition, the better screen was a major selling point for me. The biggest part, though, was the smaller size. It's not hugely different than the 3000, but it's just enough to make it something I can keep in a pocket of my white coat when I'm on call. If it had been any bigger at all that wouldn't have been nearly as convenient. Factor in the internal memory I have no regrets, but I'm also fully aware that what I value most in the system is pretty niche, as sales have shown.

That's why I got a PSP and not a DS. The DS has a ton of games that I'm mildly interested in, but nothing I feel I'm seriously missing out on by not playing.
I don't know why - perhaps it's just that lovely art style - but I've been dying to play Patapon. And Chains of Olympus. And Portable Ops.
With this year's crop of PSP titles, I was finally broken.
Edit: damnit, totp.
@ maximumzero - I replied to your question about the price - post is here.

Really nice deal, but it's already out of stock. I'll definitely get one at some point, but I don't really need one yet to be honest - I've still got about 5-6GBs of space free on the system and when I start to run out, I can always delete a couple of big RPGs when I'm finished with them.
If you like tactical rpgs I believe jean de arc is downloadable on the go.

Correction. It's fucking amazing.
But yeah, the job system is built around ability synergy and creating the most amazing hybrid/custom classes that you can through the combination of support and active abilities from a collection of classes. When in a class you have all of their abilities (minus their mastery bonus); leveling up that class allows you to equip that class's abilities in other classes. It also helps that every single active ability in this game (most classes have four of them) are all useful instead of games like FFT where there's tons of crappy and redundant abilities.
It also has plenty of veering battle types instead of just "defeat all enemies" or "reach point x". There's escort missions, a stealth mission, plenty of hold the line / you shall not pass missions, etc. The stages are varied and there's always more than one way to go through them. And you can't power level through things; the game requires actual strategy.
A stuck pixel (white, red, green, or blue) is sometimes fixable, a dead pixel (black) is not.
There are videos you can download that flash colors on the screen in an attempt to "jumpstart" the stuck pixel. I can't tell you if they work or not, but it might be worth a shot.
Honestly, homebrew is the best thing about the PSP, and seeing as the Go doesn't support it (at least not yet) I could never recommend it. The PSP is perfect for a portable emulator system, and there are emulators for practically every pre-PS1 console there is.

I'm so tired of hearing this. Not a whole lot of people really give a shit about homebrew or emulators you silly goose.
The problem is that there's so much risk. I could either brick the system, or make myself unable to play retail games if the guys doing the custom firmware don't keep up fast enough.
Not to mention there simple isn't enough for it to be worthwhile in the first place.

First rule of video games, by the system that has the games you want to play.
A lot of the the PSOne RPGs are being released on the PSP.
Here is a good list Google found. Final Fantasy, Disgaea, and Valkyrie Chronicles would all be good starts.

In that case, no.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
My Game Boy Micro has kinda gotten me sold on tiny handheld game systems. But then I kinda glance over at my wall of UMDs and change my mind.
If it ever gets to around $150 though I might grab one just as a PSX handheld.

Yes.
Because you easily could've gotten a 3000 for the price you paid for this Go. Not new, but that's still better.

For all you PSP owners, Go or otherwise, you can pick up a 16GB Memory Stick Micro M2 for $39.99 at J&R
It comes with a Pro Duo adapter so I'll be able to use it on my 3000 when it gets here.
Hopefully I can get over my scratch fear by then.
