Playing older consoles on a computer monitor (not emulation)

I would like to know if there is a good way to hookup an older console (Dreamcast, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube) to a computer monitor. From what I understand, I am better off hooking up the consoles directly, instead of through the computer via a tv-capture device due to lag issues (if I am wrong, please correct me). My current monitor is an LCD with DVI and VGA input, and the consoles would be hooking up ideally through S-Video.

Is something like this VGA Box on Amazon my best bet?

There were also VGA boxes made specifically for the Dreamcast that hook into the multi-AV on the back. The image quality is much improved.

You're looking at a native 640x480 signal being output directly to VGA versus composite or S-Video being fed through a VGA converter. Image quality will be much better.

The only downside is the VGA box (or VGA cable, depending on which one you buy) may only have a minijack for sound output. This is fine if you have regular old PC speakers, but if you're using anything with the standard red/white RCA audio you'll have to get another converter.
