I'm pulling for BMW
I think that they are allowed to use motor winches is bullshit
These are some of the coolest boats ever made
I want my normal America's Cup back
It's supposed to be. Blame Alinghi for trying to mess with the rules which lead to litigation which inevitably leads to using the 1871 deed of gift which means each team can do whatever they want.

Look, I know Bertarelli is a dick but be damned if the man doesn't put together a team of the best sailors in the world.

Putting together a good team is one thing, he wanted a 6 month or 1 year head start on designing the boat over everyone else. No one is going to try and out monopolize the American's.
It has been for a while I think, although before it was more of an engineering while skirting the rules one (pretty much like formula 1 with less dying, I guess)
I'd much rather the Cup be a one design race. If not that, then at least single hull. I'm all for innovation in sailing, but something seems...wrong about it in regards to the Cup.
Also, motorized winches are bullshit in a race like this. Hell, a few years ago people's panties got in a twist because one boat had grinders using their legs on almost a bike like set up.
I'll still follow, but the fact that it has become a very "send in the lawyers!" mentality has left a foul taste in my mouth.
That being said....I have the option to buy the boat my father and I have been racing for about 15 years. A Capri 22. I'm tempted, so so very fucking tempted. Needs about 2 grand worth of sails, but beyond that it's in outstanding condition.
Bobbing around out in the baking sun for 2 hours with no wind while you wait for the committee to cancel the race. Tempers reaching well beyond acceptable norms.
I took a sailing class once. It was the day they were learning how to properly capsize your boat. For me (someone who is about as graceful in the water as a land tortoise), getting trapped under the sail was one of the most terrifying events I can remember.
oh i believe it. I got nothing but respect for people who can make those boats go crazy fast and do those crazy 'tip the boat on it's side as far as it will go' stunt. I don't know much about sailing.
Actually, getting knocked over doesn't take that much skill. It's not getting screwed because of it that takes a little work.
As nice a picture as a heeling sailboat makes, too much heel means that the boat isn't moving nearly as efficiently as it should be. There's a sweet spot of sorts that you're kinda aiming for. Not too flat and not too "oh god, hold on."
There's a fun little rule that states you need to finish the race with the same people that you started the race with. It's to prevent...well...people being left behind by over eager captains if they fall overboard.
My dad and I used to get really into it while we were racing from time to time. Lots of yelling and use of "boat language". Well, one particular afternoon we were in an extremely close race and we had been pissing each other off for the better part of a few hours. We're barreling down towards the finish line, looks like we're going to win and whoooops...I simply stepped off the boat. He crossed the line without me and was disqualified.
Committee boat gave me a ride back to shore and I had to call my mother to come pick me up. Riding home with dad would have been ill advised.
For the first hundred years of so the cup was an engineering contest. It wasn't until the late 70s / early 80s hat everyone go serious and the rules really started getting standardized. It is much more fun to watch when the boats are similar, which was the direction it's been going from 1997 till 2007 when alinghi fucked everything up and pissed off the new york yacht club.
2007's race had more lead changes than all the other cup challenges combined.
edit* also zip, falling off the boat ain't no thing. Just means you were trying hard, you should have got mad at the crew for not picking you back up. Talk about pressure, I fell out while hiking off the mainsheet in the semifinals of a youth world championship. Thank god the dude next to me weight about twice as much as me and just hauled me back in the boat before I really left.

Don't lie to me
It took me a few seconds for my brain to parse what was going on in this picture.
Lie to me.
that is a HELL of a boat. It doesn't even look like a boat. It's like a pontoon fucked a mermaid.

I mean, there's a time and a place
but the America's Cup doesn't seem like the one
kpop appreciation station i also like to tweet some
It still takes skill to win it though.
I mean if you stuck me on the fastest boat in the world I can tell you it's not going to go very fast.
It's like any sport, you surround yourself with the best possible materials to help you do the job.
Satans..... hints.....
Once people started earning decent money through sponsorship people could take some cash and make their boat faster.
