From official site:
"Everything takes longer than expected these days. Cyan Worlds’ plans are to move MO:UL to open source, and we finally have some good news. We’ve taken a first step and started a MO:UL server, so the Ages of Uru are available again. We’ve opened all the Ages, and added most of the goodies in MO:UL. We’re referring to it as MO:ULagain - feel free to explore and enjoy."
Actually it plays pretty much like a normal Myst game. Except it is third person (unless some of the new ones were IDK). You explore the Ages, solve puzzles, and uncover a mystery (or two). The only major thing that is different is some of the puzzle require multiple people working together.
Back when I played, the GMs would host actual "classes" on the game. They would teach you the basics, a little history, and then take the Class on a bit of a guided tour of the first big puzzle. I have no idea if they still do that, but it was handy and if they still host those classes I recommend people check them out.

Wow. I know Myst made enough cash to justify five additional games' production and three novels (among other stuff), but this is the second or third time Cyan has raised Uru. Or maybe even the fourth. Talk about dedication to a concept. For whatever reason, the destiny of the D'ni, whatever it is, is just not going to go away.
Now someone rewrite Riven with this thing so we can explore the damn village, and the Rebel Age too.
Yeah they are, I'm kind of glad. And I think there's only ONE server right now, but I could be mistaken.
IIRC, couldn't players make their own private "instances" of the game and invite their friends to join?
If we're talking about the same thing, yeah. Those are the "neighborhoods." They're still on the same server, but you wouldn't run into anyone unless they joined the same one. There's a few "common" areas which aren't instanced. The Guild halls and the bar, for instance. I think the Port isn't instanced, either.
Same with Ages. Each Age is a specific instance of it, and you'd only see people who joined your specific one (via the book in your house). You have controls (that little latch on the book) that you can open it up for anyone who can get to the house to join, etc.

Yep, that is what I was thinking of.

So I never really played Myst outside of pointing and clicking a couple times as a kid when it came out. Which version is a good starting point? There was a couple versions last time I checked, including a fully 3D one.
I played all of the Uru offline components, including to D'ni and Path of the Shell, but never really got into the online component. Does this include anything new from the boxed retail releases?

Don't worry, looks like account creation is a no go at the moment anyway.
I still know very little about this game. Do solved puzzles open up areas etc for everyone on the server or what? how does it work exactly?
Kinda weird in that URU was unique. It just opened up for YOU and anyone you brought with you to your version/instance of that Age. If a player wanted to access the stuff on their own, I think they had to do it in their own instance.
And yeah, I was sad to see it be stillborn the first time (I got into URU after the servers died and they released everything as a single player expansion) then I supported Myst Online:UU (Until Uru, essentially what it is now) then I was excited when that got taken down because a week later they announced that Gametap was going to fully support it. I signed up that day. Of course, I didn't see URU for a few months, but Gametap is awesome anyway. I tried to get organized but URU at that time was a constantly evolving/changing world.
For those interested, here's the last URU Thread we had and summarizing the Gametap storyline.
Glad to hear it's back, and I'll gladly support it again.

I just asked about this on their forum, they said this:
Uru Live contains all the content from Uru: Complete Chronicles (Uru Prime, To D'ni, and Path of the Shell), plus some new ages which were released during the last online version. I'd prefer not to spoil the experience for you by listing them here.
I can't even register an account. Bah. I'll try again later.
"The MOULagain server is back up (had to switch to dilithium crystals, the lithium crystal wasn't cutting it).
However, the account creation web page is still have a little bit of a problem. So, if you already have an account you should be able to get in. If you don't have an account... we hope to have it running soon.
Also, the ip address for the web server has changed, so the dns change may not propagate to you until tomorrow.
Yeah, their servers are getting hit pretty hard, they've been going down constantly since release. Man, I've been wanting to try this ever since I saw it released on GameTap. The whole idea of a puzzle/exploration game like this is very appealing to me.

That's actually kinda nice. The Gametap version DIDN'T have To D'ni or Path of the Shell. Well, it had parts of To D'ni but not the full story.

A number of the puzzles and such require multiple people to accomplish.
edit- I am downloading it now. If we get a number of people together we should call ourselves the "Arcadian Archeology Club". :P
Splendidly. :P

Yep, that is what I was thinking of.
I tried to get it yesterday but yeah, the server's hammered since it became a big news story a day or two ago.
Apparently that is two patchers stuck loading. Go into task manager and kill the process (not just ending the application), then try again.
EDIT: I'm currently looking at a 48 minute download apparently.

Mine too. It was working, then it said "lost connection" or some such. Now it does not go past "Checking patcher update.....".
