Guvera is a music distribution service created in reaction to music piracy, so named because it aims to 'revolutionise' the music industry by offering music downloads freely and legally. Now that's a pretty lofty claim to make, so I'm still a tad skeptical whether or not this will be taken on. It's still in it's beta stages, but I created an account this morning about a week after registering my interest. I believe it's only available in Australia (it's an Australian-based website) and the US right now.
Essentially it's supposed to work by getting advertisers to pay the artists for the downloads. After I registered, I had to go through several lists of things like 'favorite movies' and tick off various genres, and this information (so I'm led to believe) will be used by companies to focus their advertising. The tracks have to be downloaded through the profiles of the various sponsors of the site - and they already have some fairly large sponsors.
The annoying thing is your downloads are limited by 'credits'. I earned a few by filling out my interests, but still not entirely sure how you're supposed to get more after this, since this only got me enough to download one song. Also, since this
is a beta, the site is pretty buggy, and I've run in to errors a number of times.
The web design is slick, but in some ways too minimalistic, since the lack of information makes it a tad confusing how the whole process works. The advertising on the page isn't too overbearing, and so far I haven't received any spam emails (though I haven't had the account for very long). The downloads have good sound quality and aren't watermarked.
