Title says it all. There appear to be lots of them, and very little differentiation between them.

Anyone had particularly good or bad experiences with any of them?

Blogspot is the first that comes to mind. Never used it before but ive read a few good blogs on it.

Google should be good to look for them, but whenever I need to write something down, I just use the blog on my Myspace. Then again, maybe you hate Myspace, which I could no blame you for.

I use Blogger with great results. They just got taken over by Google, which is never a bad thing feature-wise.

Yeah. I've used several in my blogging life (livejournal, Blogger, WordPress, etc.), but Blogger is probably my favorite, if for no other reason than the fact that it allows you plenty of latitude with your page's HTML.

Just for the OP, Blogspot and Blogger are the same thing. When you sign up for Blogger you get a username.blogspot.com address. It's awesome, is what I use, and you shouldn't consider anything else.

Customisable templates and all that jazz as well.

If you're going to update a lot, Blogger/Blogspot sometimes will lock up your blog and be a real pain about letting it free again. If you have hosting and database, I'd suggest WordPress. I moved mine over manually because I'd already started it (see link in sig) but a friend of mine moved his girlfriend's existing blog with very little trouble from Blogger to WP.
