This seems relevant to the gull discussion:
But then we get to the really weird stuff: in a study as large as this, quite a few anomalies were found. One gull had swallowed the legs of a small plastic doll [shown below; from Camphuysen et al. (2008)]. Another one ate a plastic squid-like fishing decoy (which is not so surprising, as the object looks like a real squid). 16 small army figures had been swallowed by one gull [shown here; from Camphuysen et al. (2008)], hence the reference to a 'whole army' in the article's title (note, however, that the toy soldiers were little ones, not the more typical 50-mm-tall ones we're used to). Another gull had eaten a whole medal (still with complete ribbon attached: it's shown above), and another one had swallowed a whole mobile phone [shown at top] (Camphuysen et al. 2008). Funnily enough, the phone - a Sony Ericsson W610i - is exactly the same (now quite dated) phone that I use, and if you want confirmation look at the photo here.

Yeah, the presentation was very accessible. It is a good way to setup the information.

The 2012 hoax site might be more comprehensive, but it is not as accessible as the pixlmonster one.

Though it is exetremely sad that both sites are lulling the populace into not preparing for the imminent apocalypse that will occur in 2012 as predicted by the Mayans and numerous other sources.

At the TED Conference last year Bill Gates unleashed a swarm of mosquitoes to demonstrate a point about malaria. This year, he's taking on CO2 in a big way. And he brought fireflies.

The bugs were Gates' example of a living "energy miracle"—the kind we'll need to solve the enormous energy problems that face mankind. Some perspective, from his speech: even if we were to maximize energy efficiency and limit the impact of population size, we'd still be emitting 13 billion tons of carbon annually from energy production.

So what's his solution? First: excluding coal and natural gas altogether from our energy future. Instead, the focus needs to be on carbon capture, nuclear, wind, and solar power. In particular, Gates singled out depleted uranium supplies as having the potential to power the US for centuries. The technology is possible; it's just not being funded.

Despite advances in nuclear power—and particularly the regulation thereof—the idea of nuclear energy still makes Americans skittish. So if Gates is serious about wanting this to happen, he's going to have to do more than open up his wallet. He's going to have to change our perception entirely.

Gates has been posting his thoughts on his TED talk at The Gates Notes, so be sure to look for updates on more specifics around feasibility, implementation, and what insects he's got planned for TED 2011

Bill Gates gave a talk to the engineering faculty at my school several years ago. He was incredibly fascinating to listen to and, afterwards, a select few of us (done through a lottery) got to have dinner with him. Sitting at a table with Gates, MIT/Berkley/Cambridge doctoral graduates, my university president, dead, etc.

I've never felt so out of place and in perfect company at the same time.

One of the best feelings I've ever felt.

Is this true? I know people say this all the time, but I've never actually met anyone who finds nuclear power to be dangerous. I've never even found anyone like that on the internet, and I've met anti-vaxxers, GW denialists, creationists, furries and whatever the fuck those guys over on 4chan are on the internet.

Has anyone ever actually talked to someone who is scared of nuclear power? Did you laugh in their face? Or cry because it's so sad that society allows them to exist?

so how would you dispose of nuclear waste in a safe manner?

i'm not saying i am for or against, but if we rely on nuclear power then the amount of waste will increase while available storage decreases

but no, don't question anything, just laugh in peoples faces and pity them

guy acts like a silly goose, gets treated like a silly goose

i see nothing wrong with treating people the same way they treat others

yea there sure have been advances alright, but you didnt address my point, what do we do with the waste if more power starts to come from nuclear sources?

there IS a limited amount of space that we can use for storage, what happens when that starts to fill up?

it isn't like a landfill, you cant just put a layer of dirt over it and forget about it for 100 years, these storage sites need yearly monitoring for probably millions of years
