Hair In Need

I'm not the type of guy who gets his hair cut often. You could say that my last hair cut was half a year ago, and you'd still be wrong - it's closer to 9 months. That in mind, the piteous wailings from friends, family and random passers-by have led me to believe that it is time to get my hair cut down to size.

This is where I could use some help. I've no clue what to do with my hair. Some photographic evidence of this, my current styling:

Yes, it is a sad state of affairs. I'm open to any advice as to how it should be cut and styled. Limitations:

1) I don't often use product, but could use wax in the future (as I shower in the evening, rather than the morning and so require a product that goes on dry hair).
2) I have extremely dense hair.
3) I want it shorter. At the very least, shorter on the sides and slightly shorter on top. If at all possible, I'd like to maintain the side part. Not a fan of "messy" looks.

Love and kisses in advance for your lovely advice.

I'm going to say what I usually say in these threads. Go to a professional stylist.

A stylist will be able to create a style that complements your face and body.

It will be on the expensive side, but once you get your hair styled, a regular barber can just give you a trim and keep the shape.

Alas, my funding is downright skimpy until my next gig starts in the summer. While not quite an Ultracuts, the girl I'll be seeing will require a bit more direction than a true professional.

If I could buy a $50 haircut I agree it would be the best route.

Damn you! I'd kill to have wavy hair like yours, and you've got good sideburns too.

Anyways, I notice your facial structure and natural wave to your hair is very similar to that of Russell Crowe and his hair.

Try growing out your facial hair and rock a look like this:

    That'd look alright.

I dunno...I actually think you look quite good the way it is. When I looked at the photos before reading the post, I thought you were referencing the look you *wanted* because it looked so nice.

Are you a professional photographer or something? Because those pics look really good.

I think ultimately ditto on what Dangerbird said.

I'm with Killgrimage - what you have now is nice and suits you. But yeah, the back and top could be a bit shorter. It seems to look its best from your front, so I'd think getting the back trimmed wouldn't hurt. The top of the back/back of the top also looks a bit square-ish from the side, so if you can get that trimmed, you'll look a bit better.

Am I correct in assuming you are a classy dude? Or want to be a classy dude with shoes polished even when not getting married?

Because Jimmy Carr has classy hair if you ask me, he also has a relatively round face and wavy hair

Although he does have a lot of personality, so maybe he can just make any hairstyle look great. I mean, half the reason why your current hairstyle doesn't look bad is because you have a self-assured expression on your face.

(Think about the hair product commercials on TV: the girls look desperate and the colours are almost gray: bad hair! They use the hair product, all colours come back to the image, they smile a happy smile: good hair!)

Yeah, leave it how it is, just clean it up a little. Do not put radical departures in hair styles in the hands of amateurs (whoever you have cutting your hair). When the summertime comes and you have some more ducats, go see a pro and put yourself in their hands.

Excellent! I'll probably more or less keep it the same, then. Small trim all around, thin it out on top and on the sides (which get really poofy) and get the back a bit more structured. Fix the boxiness. The 'burns will go for now, I think. They're unwieldy and I can't grow a beard at the moment - so they get terribly lonely. In a pinch, they can be back in business in two weeks. Yes?

Aldo, while I am a classy dude and Jimmy's hair looks great, it'd involve me doing a whole lot of straightening. The shot of my hair in the OP is about as straight as it ever gets, and fresh out of a shower the front curl actually starts spiralling.

Thanks everyone for the advice and the surprising amount of flattery.

As promised: Sweet closure. The hair is cut, the deed is done. Thanks for the advice - I'm thrilled with the outcome.
