From the Article:
The company that owns the video game and movie rights to Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series Wheel of Time, Red Eagle Games, has just announced a partnership with Obsidian Entertainment with the intent of producing a series of RPGs for the PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 platforms based on the Wheel of Time series. Obsidian Entertainment is best known for developing Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars: KOTOR2 and the upcoming post-nuclear RPG, Fallout: New Vegas.

Larry Mondragon of Red Eagle Games had a few words to say about the announcement:
You will all be happy to hear that we are not planning to make a traditional “movie” game that merely recasts the picture we are currently making with Universal. Instead, we want to concentrate our development efforts on telling the other facets of The Wheel of Time story. And as you know, we have a lot to choose from– literally thousands of years of history and scores of major characters, nations, geographies and critical moments in the history of the world since the beginning of the Third Age.
Thus, we have been vetting many creative ideas for game formats, including games derived from the Age of Legends, The Breaking of the World, the War of the Shadow, and even a game concept that focuses on the battle among the Forsaken to become the one and only Nae’blis. We are also looking at skill-based games that are based on the testing of the Aes Sedai for the shawl and the wielding of the many intricate sword forms that are second nature to an experienced Warder. All of this is to simply say that we are critically thinking about game design for an entire family of WOT games that are consistent and supportive of the story portrayed in the movies, but that do far more that merely retell the plotlines, characters and scenes from the films. Trust me when I say that we intend to build games that will excite the imagination of every WOT fan. We just ask that the Wheel of Time community wait to see the fruits of our labor before passing judgement on whether we have been successful in our efforts.

I would also like to make one additional clarification. We are not licensing our WOT development rights and stepping back from the process of building these video games. Quite to the contrary, Red Eagle Games will have an internal development team of its own. However, rather than staffing up a 200 person studio from scratch, we decided some time ago that for our first games it would be far more prudent to hire a small in-house team (e.g. positions such as Art Director, Game Designer, Story Writer, Software Architect, Quality Assurance Director, etc.) and rely on a third party developer to provide the majority of developers and their associated overhead and infrastructure. In this way, we will be providing technical and creative direction to our external developer.

Obsidian Entertainment is a highly-respected game developer with a well-deserved industry reputation for building quality action/role-playing games. By eliminating the need to recruit and manage a large internal workforce within Red Eagle Games, we expect that this new relationship with Obsidian will enable the Company to achieve substantially lower development costs, a shorter production cycle, and improve the quality of our initial video game releases.

This could be amazing, I have a lot of respect for Obsidian Entertainment. Also, it could be the opposite of amazing.

I wonder how much mana it takes one to smooth one's skirt?

Is Hellforge a reputable site? Is this for real?

Obsidian doing a Wheel of Time RPG? What?

A thing I love and a thing I hate. I don't know what to make of this.

It's not quite as mana intensive to use as tugging ones braid or using the debuff "woolheaded" on male characters.

Yeah, I'm with you there. Well, I mean, I don't hate WoT, it just dragged on waaaaaaaay too long. But, I mean... I think of the magic and I'm like "Okay, it has the potential to be fun."

    It'll be alright.

Think of it this way. Even if you hate the, well, boringness of the series, most people adore the actual heart of the story.

This will be a new medium in which they can tell the story and cut out all of the inane bullshit.

Robert Jordan's work could finally arise, reborn from the ashes of thousands of unnecessary book pages, leaner and more amazing than ever before.

I mean, it is Obsidian, they should be given at least a little credit, right?

Hey, this is good news since I really like the Wheel of Time series, especially since they're not going to rehash the books in game format, they're going to tell a different story in the same world. Hopefully they don't fuck it up.

If I had my way it would be like Demon's Souls meets White Knight Chronicles.

By that I mean, you use specific buttons for blocking, striking, parrying, riposting, etc. but you also create and execute combinations with fancy names ala the books.

    ^This.

And there is so much potential for awesome with these games based on what the press release says. An RPG developed by Obsidian set in the Age of Legends leading right up to the War of the Shadow? Hells yes.

I'm certainly going to attempt to not get too excited over this, as there is definitely an equal, if not greater, potential for disastrous outcomes with this. I rather hope Larry Mondragon was just using PR speak and that all the actual development/design/story come out of Obsidian rather than being directed by Red Eagle Games people.

Hell. Even the Aiel can be pretty kick ass. In the first book, when Perrin is with the travelling people they mention a throwaway group of aiel teenagers that fought into and back out of the blight. They eventually lost to the fist that followed them, but even so, wetlanders wouldn't have even made it in in the first place.
