Hey guys,

I have a laptop running Ubuntu. I'm running VirtualBox 3.1.2....the virutual OS is Windows XP SP3.

Well I installed steam and downloaded Civ4...however it says the grapics card isn't supported. When I go to Device Manager it says the Display Adapter is VirtualBox Graphics Adapter.

I'm guessing it doesn't support that one...is there a way to change what's used?

So far as I know, most virtual machines don't support 3d graphics. Try using Wine to run Civ 4, since it seems supported.

I can attest that Wine does run Civ4 well (Arch Linux, Nvidia graphics).

It being a *nix application, though, expect a bit of elbow grease to get it running.

I got it to run...but it runs terribly. :(

Ah well...always have my desktop for it.

Keep fiddling. Games on Linux can take a lot of effort in some cases.

I'm not exactly sure what I need to fiddle with. I'm not very Linux Savy to be honest.

I have an extra copy of Windows 7, I may just create a dual boot.

You can always try checking the wine site to see what people did to get Civ 4 to run. Just search for Civ 4.

If you do install Win 7, it will likely screw up your boot loader. There's ways to fix it, but it's usually easier to install Windows first then Linux, at least in my experience. I haven't tried it with Windows 7, though.

Also, check this thread in Moe's, if you haven't already. It's been helpful for my forays into Linux.

EDIT: And when I say fiddle with it, I mean screw with the settings, and conf files. When I briefly tried gaming on Linux, it was a bit of a pain to get some things to run properly. You might need to tweak some things.

Sounds good thanks. I think my main issue has to do with the fact that I'm running it through steam. I may fiddle more with it in the coming days. Thanks again.

Glad to help. I've found Linux both deeply frustrating, and deeply satisfying.

My version was run through Steam as well. A heads up: if you don't install the DirectX 9 runtime, then the game will actually still run under Wine, but ass slow. You can use Winetricks to automate the install or maybe download and run it manually (I have not done it this way).

Or just go screw it and dual-boot Windows, that'll work peachy too.

Eh, I think I figured it out.

I just have the intel integrated graphics on this thing...probably not enough to run Civ4. :(

Civ4 just about works via CrossOver (essentially Wine for the lazy and command line-naive) on my Mac Mini which has shitty integrated Intel graphics. Just.
