Okay so we were given this d-link router, DIR-615
and it of course comes with windows start up discs
humble and i both have macs
so i'm trying to set it up, and everywhere on the internet says plug ethernet cable from router to computer, then plug the one that came with the router from router to modem, then go to 192.168.0.1. and set up wireless stuff through there
all of that is fine and dandy till i get to the setup wireless stuff through that ip address.
it won't load for me
can anyone lend a hand with this? i would appreciate it so much
i can't access the firmware at all
i can't load it from the disc or anything cause it's only for pcs.
but people on the internet are like "just go to 192.168.0.1 and you can access it from there" and that doesn't work
i know...so little about computers for someone who makes a living relying entirely on them
Okay first, is your computer connected to the WAN port or one of the multiple LAN ports? Make sure it's in a LAN port not the WAN port (we are talking about on the router here)
Next what is your IP address? It should start with 192.168. If it starts with 169.x.x.x then you wanna power down the modem, disconnect it from the PC, power it back on, and reconnect the PC to it. If you're still not getting a 192.168 IP address you may be honked a bit.
Once you get a valid IP address you should be able to to connect with the web browser

Your MAC should be plugged in to a LAN port on the 615. You don't even need it connected to your dsl/cable modem to begin with.
Your MAC should acquire an IP Address in the 192.168.0.x range (usually 192.168.0.100 to 105), assuming this is a brand new 615 and hasn't been altered from it's default state.
Once your MAC has acquired an IP you should be able to open 192.168.0.1 in a web browser, and it will prompt you for a username and password, and beyond this, configuration-town.
look at the bottom of the router. it will have printed on it the "default gateway" or "default access" these are usually either 192.169.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or www.routerlogin.com or www.routeraccess.com
it was brand new in the box unopened, humble's mom didn't need it
under "airport" it's saying my router is connected to IP: 24.222.83.169.
which is different from what it says in ethernet, in the ethernet section it says the router's ip is 24.89.192.1
From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .
In System Preferences, from the View menu, select Network.
Select the appropriate port. For example, choose Ethernet for broadband connections, AirPort for wireless, or Internal Modem for dial-up.
Click Advanced... , and in the sheet that opens, click the TCP/IP tab. The number next to "Router:" is your default gateway.
This is how you WILL access your router firmware. if this does not work, something is broken/wrong. if this does not work look in the router's manual for the "factory reset" procedure.

computers are so confusing
That is very odd, unless you've plugged into your modem by mistake.
Sometimes my mac gives itself an IP address that all out of wack - I think it actually says a warning though. To fix it, I do a power cycle.
1. Turn everything off.
2. Turn the router on, and leave for a few minutes for it to connect to everything.
3. Turn on each computer, one at a time - starting with those connected via ethernet.

I have no idea what you're talking about.
As for Beavo: When you say you were "Given" the 615, is that somebody gave you a new one or one they'd been using?
