PS3 not reading discs

Hey all, just got a PS3, and I had an HDMI cable ready to go.

However, the TV displays 'Invalid Object' when I have it connected. What could this mean?

The PS3 works fine via AV, but I had my heart set on seeing my first HD console in action.

Hold down the power button until you get a double beep with only the hdmi connected.

This is the ps3 "video reset".

    And right into another problem.

It's not reading discs at all.

And this is a brand new console. :(

failure of the optical drive's laser is an uncommon but known problem

if it's brand new your best course of action will be to take it straight back to the retailer. you'll be able to swap it
