Microsoft Word problem - page number is skipping a page

Background information: I'm using Microsoft Word 2002, and when I'm done modifying this document, it's going to be converted to a PDF for distribution.

I have a 184 page document, and the page number is messed up between 159 and 161. It's like it thinks there's an invisible Page 160 somewhere, but there isn't. I tried starting the page number from 160 there, but it just magically switches back to page 161.

This was a problem in other sections in the document, but I "fixed" it by adding page breaks in the middle of previous pages so as to push the information into the "missing" page. For example, it happened with pages 46 and 48, with a missing page 47, so I pushed some of the content on page 46 onto the next page, and page 47 magically appeared. Page 48 stayed exactly the same. Unfortunately, I can't do that with page 159 because there isn't enough content on it to push to the next page without looking completely ridiculous.

Anybody know what I can do? I suspect it has something to do with the section break, because every instance of this in the document has taken place right before a section break, but I'm not sure what I can do to fix it.

Begin on next section problem? Show your invisibles. Look for section breaks.

Yeah, there's a section break right before "page 161". It's necessary because I have a different footer for that section than the previous section. I've tried changing the break from Continuous to New Page to Even Page to Odd Page; nothing changed.

OK, you need to select continued from previous section. Go to format: Page number. Then tick continue from previous section, and then check your settings for your first page. On the word header/footer tool bar I'm pretty sure it's the icon with a big 1 on it.

I'm using 2004 for the mac, but it should be similar.

It's already set to that, unfortunately. I tried unselecting it, applying, and then selecting it again, but it didn't change anything.

Well, I'll never know what the problem was, but I decided to fix it by just typing in the page numbers manually. I was almost to the end of the document anyway.

    Problem Solved!

That's hardly a real solution. Did you look at the print preview? Wrestle your software into submission!

When you go to the Numbering Properties for the 161st page, there should be an option called, "Start At..." where you can select a number to begin with. You might have to un-check "Continue From Last".

It's fine, really. I wasn't the person who created the document in the first place, I'm just updating and modifying it, so who knows what crazy shit the guy before me did. It's not really worth deciphering, and in any case I already changed it manually, converted it to PDF, and sent it off to my boss, so it's not an issue anymore.

    Lock 'er up!

FYI, I just had this same problem (or a similar one). What I discovered was the section break just before the skipped page anomaly was actually an Odd Page Section Break. Not what I wanted! I tried inserting a Next Page Break just BEFORE it and deleting the Odd Page Break, but then the Next Page Break would revert back into an Odd Page Break. So I tried putting the Next Page Break AFTER the Odd Page Break and deleting the Odd Page Break...and that worked.

I had this happen. Someone wrote about section breaks - that is the problem if your have done the format paging correct. I could not even type the page number I wanted in the document. Strange.

So I went to file and selected options. Then I displayed all formatting. From there I removed extra section breaks that were not needed. This worked like a champ.

    Hope this helps someone.
