Comic advice?

Hello all!

I hope this is the right forum for this. I was wondering about comics basically. Lately I've been into indie comics and I've tried to get into some of the DC/Marvel titles as well. I'm curious to know if anyone has any recommendations for comics. I've read Scott Pilgrim, I'm reading Wet Moon, Strangers in Paradise, have read Watchmen, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, Squee, I Feel Sick, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Unlovable and I'm trying to read Earth X but I can't really get into it for some reason. On the Japanese side I've read Paradise Kiss, NANA, currently working through all of the Sailor Moon and I've read Battle Angel Alita. I didn't like Oh My Goth or Likewise so hopefully no one suggests that.

So really, I've pulled from different genres and stories so I hope that opens up a lot of comics to suggest. Comedy is always a plus! I have until the end of the month to order the comics. Japanese or America, anything is good. I just ask that the comics you suggest be really good.

This isn't the wrong forum for this at all but there is also the Graphic Violence forum that is dedicated to comic books. You might want to check that out if you haven't already.

Invincible by Image comics is pretty good.

DC is currently in the middle of their big superevent, but you might want to jump on after that ends (April, I think).
There's a big Superman event, War of the Supermen, coming out in the spring/summer, and that's said to be a good place for people to start reading.

In the meantime, I'd recommend picking up some trades. Green Lantern: Rebirth, Batman: Year One, and All Star Superman are all excellent books that can be read without an in-depth knowledge of the characters.

Currently, the best thing I'm reading is 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa. He also did Monster and Pluto, and they are both great as well.

For US stuff, I don't really read any super hero books, but I love B.P.R.D.. I would also recommend Dash Shaw's Bottomless Belly Button and the Love & Rockets series by the Hernandez Bros. Jaime Hernandez does work that is easier to get into, but Gilbert Hernandez is more rewarding to re-read.

Preacher, by Garth Ennis: A cynical, foul mouthed preacher who's just about lost his faith is possessed by Genesis, the child of an angel and a demon, who's powers are the equal of either God or the devil. He decides to track down the Good Lord and hold him to account for how badly He's neglected His creation. R-rated. Weird as hell. So fucking awesome.

Red Son, by Mark Millar: Superman, the last son of Krypton crashes on Earth 12 hours earlier than he does in the canonical DC universe, landing in the USSR instead of America. One trade, so it's fast reading, and it's great fun. I'm a sucker for riffs off the Superman story.

Supreme Power, by J. M. Straczynski: A riff on the Superman story, again. Ma and Pa Kent find a crashed saucer with an alien child inside. Not twenty minutes later the US government kicks down the door to their farm and takes the toddler away at gunpoint, raising him. Just get the first 3 volumes, after that I've heard it gets really stupid.

Batman: the Dark Knight Returns, by Frank Miller: Arguably the best Batman story ever told? Just don't read the sequel. Oh god oh god auughghllggh. One trade paperback. Batman don't shiv.

Global Frequency, by Warren Ellis: Global Frequency is a worldwide rescue organization created to deal with any crisis that is too big, too dangerous, or too late to handle by conventional means. Sometimes I'm scared at night, but these two trade paperbacks are always there to stroke my hair and lull me back to sleep with some light spooning, and a series of excellent one-shot stories.

Hellboy AND/OR B.P.R.D., by Mike Mignola: Hellboy is a blue collar demon raised by a paranormal investigator to fight the minions and agents of Lovecraftian horrors from beyond time and space. He punches werewolves and draculas, and is so very unimpressed with them. It is one of the best thing ever, and it has incredibly touching moments as well. So many trade paperbacks oh my god yes.

Y: the Last Man, by Brian K. Vaughn: Yorick is the last man on Earth after something wipes every other Y-chromosome carrying creature off the face of the Earth. Um, it is really excellent. You'll laugh, you'll cry, it's better than Cats.

Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E., by Warren Ellis: I can't put it any better than the writer did in his pitch. NEXTWAVE is not about Character Arcs and Learning and Morals and Hugs. It is about cramming an insane movie into 44 pages at a time. It is about the mad things underpinning Marvel Comics and it is about special effects out of Asian cinema and absurd levels of destruction and a skewed sense of humour and Spectacle and things blowing up and people getting kicked. It is about humanoid Clone Things made out of engine oil and broccoli being smacked to death by a woman with a guitar. Several trades, which I do not own all of because I fail at life and hate myself.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, by Alan Moore: Go and buy it. Two trades, and then there's the Black Dossier, but it's got more text-only pages than comics so I don't know. Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Hawley Griffin, Dr. Henry Jekyll/Mr. Edward Hyde, and Mina Murray (née Harker) are recruited by the British government to solve an incredible case. It's Alan Moore being awesome as hard as he can.

Any Hellblazer comic written by Mike Carey: Best noir supernatural detective stories where a horrible shit named John Constantine goes around solving mysteries and getting all of his friends killed because that's the kind of guy he is. Several trades worth of excellent horror stories and badasses and what the hell is that I don't even.

Astonishing X-Men, by Joss Whedon: Four trades. Loved it. Dialogue and characterization and plots that maybe other people are sick of but I will eat it all day. It gets kind of stupid at the end of the second trade, but I think it recovers quite well. Maybe others will disagree but they are wrong (shhhh, lalalalala).

V for Vendetta, by Alan Moore: Maybe you saw the movie and were like, hey that seems kind of cool, or you were all, this is stupid how the fuck would a company like FedEx even exist in a state without privacy laws oh god the stupid it burns ugh ugh. Read the trade. Love again.

Also going to second the previous suggestion of Fables and Astrocity (in particular the Tarnished Angel and Confession trades). Fables starts off with, hey this is a neat concept about the characters in childrens' stories and nursery rhymes escaping to our world because of an invading army, and then all of a sudden you've read all 17 trade paperbacks and it's not enough it's never enough. Astrocity is solid stuff what is fun to read.

Ultimate Spider Man- Pretty much one of the most solid titles around.

Ultimates- Pick up only Volume 1 and 2 by Millar. Stay away from Loeb.

Actually, that's prett good advice overall, stay away from anything new by Loeb.

You owe it to yourself to read Vagabond if you like japanese stuff. One of the best comics I've ever read. The only downside is that it is hella long and I'm not sure it's even finished yet in japan. It is based on the novel Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, but is a very liberal interpretation. What I took away from it is that wandering swordsmen are basically serial killers, but much more acceptable and romantic.

Also check out Ex Machina. It's a comic where a super hero becomes mayor of new york.

Most of the best work has already been mentioned. Good stuff here.

I'm a recovering comic fan, but I still really like Guy Delisle's travel graphic novels. Pyongyang is a really nice look inside North Korea, based on the author's work there as an animator. He has a very Western and cynical perspective, but he shows things that I haven't seen anywhere else. Shenzen is okay as well, and he also has one called Burma.

While there have been some excellent suggestions, it's a noted* - possibly scientific!* - fact that 'The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck' by Don Rosa is the finest comic book(s) ever produced.

*Well, not really. It did win an Eisner award, and it's really awesome, though, so read it.

    Some other suggestions/thoughts:

The Invincible IronMan: Extremis, by Warren Ellis: All the best parts of the IronMan movie were taken from this trade paperback, and some of the best parts of this comic didn't make it to the movie. (I'm in the significant minority who thought IronMan kind of sucked as far as comicbook movies go, even though I loved RDJ's Stark.) On top of that, it answers a fundamental concern/problem I had with IronMan: how can I root for a hero who uses guns to kill people?

Planetary, by Warren Ellis: Um. It's... it's weird. It's like... the X-files meets DC superhero comics? It's got pulp-hero archeology, and new takes on iconic characters, and an epic tale of intrigue, and disturbing gonzo ideas from wall to wall to wall. I think at one point Dracula gets kicked in the crotch, and someone digs a lethal horror out of a fictional universe... It is crazy and great. It's crazygreat.
