So this is wierd. Earlier I noticed my smaller cat had been shaved on her right hind-leg, with a scab in the shaved section; looks as if she'd had an injection.

I quiz my parents about it and they also have no idea how it happened

Yeah you guys must live in huge asshole cat sections of the world or something. I've met some asshole cats but the vast majority have been one of three thing. Extremely skittish/terrified, don't really give a fuck, or very friendly. Sometimes all three in one cat.

And I've never met one who disliked eye contact. They'll either stare right at you indefinitely or stare for a bit, then squint a few times and wander off to sleep or do something else.

    Miss having a cat. :(

I'm pretty sure this was actually a case of you petting/scratching them in a specific place they didn't want you to and the only reliable way they have to let you know is to swat you, but you just interpreted as "too much attention! leave me alone!". Also from my experience, it's just a light swat and you really only bleed if you yank away. Since, you know, their claws are curved so you're just digging them in by doing so. If a cat swats me while I'm petting it, I just chill out and stop petting it there. Piece of cake, no pain, no blood. This has been the case for almost every cat I've met. Some a you is just stupid.

Same reason a cow is not going to kill you unless it falls on you.

Except if you get between one of them and a bucket of sweet feed (that's a lot of mass in motion)

i'd also like to mention the same if you get between a cow and calf, or a sow and piglet

also having been charged by cows and bulls i laugh at anybody saying they aren't dangerous

Look, would you go up to a german shepherd you'd never met before and just immediately start hugging and scratching him without giving him a moment to sniff you and see how he reacts? I dig dogs and cats, they're both rad in different ways. But most of you pussies that are all, "cats are dicks to me every time fuck them" are usually creating your own problems because you're often doing the equivalent of walking up to a strange dog and just charging right in. And cats are generally much smaller and less able to defend themselves, so if they're not comfortable with something it's going to freak them out more. I almost never experience the problems you cat haters claim are par for the course with cats. If you don't care, fine. But don't blame it on the cat.

Spike is basically the sweetest cat ever and 100% affectionate. Sometimes it's almost too much, but he just likes being with people.

And Dru's spot on. Cats are different and respond differently to attention. Best example - lots of people like scratching their bellies. If the cat doesn't know you, this can be a huge issue because stomach = vital organs and their defense instincts will kick in.

If a cat knows you, they'll probably love getting their belly scratched, but otherwise it's a one-way ticket to getting scratched. Not the cat's fault.

My experience with standoffish cats comes from a long life of having cats in the household. I'm not a stranger to them, but they'll be damned if they'll let me pet them, on the back only, for longer than a minute or two. This also holds for most of my friends cats that I've seen on a regular basis.

Poor little chap. Tell him RAWR RAWR RAWR RAWR for me; he'll know what it means.

My dog has to get sedated when they pull his ear-hair. He has a lot and it puts him at risk for more ear infections, but I always feel awful when he is all drowsy after.
